Drivetrain HEAT Intercooler
HEAT Intercooler
Whats up with the heat that comes from the intercooler ??
Took a run with my friend on an Subaru Impreza that also had an TMIC, my intercooler was VERY hot, but his was very cold.
And when I am driving it hard, I think i got a fire under my hood ...
is this engine supposed to run this hot ?
what can I do to fix it ? larger intercooler, FMIC ?
is this maby something a tune will fix ?

If you're doing alot of hard driving, or tracking your MINI, you're dealing with what's called heat soak. The stock IC heat soaks really quick, but it's supposed to also cool really quick. What you could have been dealing with is the intercooler getting hot after sitting with your bonnet closed. There is more than likely a larger gap between the bottom of the WRC IC and the engine compared to the MINI setup.
This thread compares the stock IC, GP IC, and the new DoS IC temperature differences: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-from-dos.html. Granted the test was done with an ambient temperature of 55-56 degrees.
Although I really like the design of the DoS IC, I could not justify spending over $1K for it. I opted for the GP IC and DDM Works GP diverter. You can get both from WMW for about $610. I painted it with a can of Eastwood radiator paint, which has heat dissipating properties. Here's a link that shows how any black coating helps: http://www.molalla.net/members/leeper/coatbar.htm.
You can also opt to buy the M7 extreme scoop, which will help divert more air to flow across the intercooler. Cost is $229 unpainted. If you are really serious about cooling, you can get DoS' water-to-air intercooler setup (sold by Detroit tuned). Expect to shill out $2,700 for it, though.

The amount ofheat is also due to the realitive inefficency of the roots blower at higher boost levels...one of the negatives of a pulley....more heat...ok if the car is moving...
the fact the oem heat soaks fast is both good/bad....it cools of fast too due to it lightweight construction....
More aiflow will help....less boost will help...bigger ic will help...but that will cause more lag....water to air ic will help tons....simple fact..air is compressed, it gets hot, the more boost, the hotter it will be!!

Just wanted to say I have noticed very little lag upgrading to the GP IC, and I have noticed only a very slight drop in overall boost numbers. I think it was worth it.
Also keep in mind, if you decided to get a higher-flowing head, your boost numbers will drop, but the gains will far outweigh that negative effect.

when the engine is modified with a better head....it flows better, resulting in lower boost numbers, when in actuality more air is flowing....at a slightly lower pressure, and lower temp due to less less comprrssive heating...more efficency overall, and more power...
