I thought A/F gauges run off of a dedicated oxygen sensor tapped into a bung in the exhaust system. I suppose you might be able to tap into the existing O2 sensor, but I would be afraid to mess up the ECU's sensor paths

You can run off the stock O2 sensor (actually the Autometer one can only run off the stock O2 sensor I believe) however these AF guages aren't very accurate as they are narrow band O2 gauges. The dedicated O2 or wideband is a much better device to measure AF.

Just in front of the battery terminal is a connector. It has 4 wires, 2 white, a grey and a black. Tap the black and you are set to go. It doesn't mess anything up. If you ever go for a wideband box, they make a translation box that allows the autometer gauge to function with the wideband sensor. I have found it to be more accurate than I thought it would be. Compares favorably to wideband exhaust probe tests. I am getting a wideband box soon...I'll let you know.

Blue, please do share when you go wideband by starting a new thread. The last time I asked for you to share something you caught some serious grief over on MINI2 I'd be curious to see where you decide to mount the gauge as well...

narrowbands work pretty well for cruising or constant speeds where you have
hills and long inclines. you can monitor if you wanna just leave it in the
same gear or to drop a gear. especially good for cars running higher boost
and part throttle. not intended to be used as accurate instantaneous monitoring
meter. you need a wideband for that (for tuning, etc).

i would rate the accuracy as if someone was using a generic radar detector
to find cops.
