Drivetrain Strange Whine - SuperCharger?
Strange Whine - SuperCharger?
I'm driving my '02 MCS with 38,000 miles on it. About a year ago, I noticed a strange whine when leaving from a dead stop in my driveway to enter the main road. With the wheels turned to the left, when lifting the clutch and pressing the gas, the car lets out a fairly loud, but sort of melodic, "whaaaaarrrrr" from the engine. (Melodic = Not a roar, or a screech, but more of a tonal sound).
It is not every time I take off, just 1 out of 10 or so.
I thought at first it was the PS Pump, and replaced it (after it died on me). I was wrong. Sound is still there.
My fear - SuperCharger. Anyone tell me what it sounds like when it is failing, and with only 38,000 miles, could it really be that?

sounds to me like the infamous glazed flywheel chewbacca noise that almost every r53 has when on a stock clutch.
Why does my clutch sound like Chewbacca?
More than likely you have a glazed flywheel. This is a very common and semi-embarrassing problem. However, does not effect performance, motor on!

This noise has nothing to do with your supercharger.
More than likely, it's not a glazed clutch. Probably the infamous throwout bearing. Both my old '02 MCS (115K miles) and current '06 MCS (67K miles) have done it. It's typical on a cold clutch, cold morning, and/or rainy day. Once the clutch has warmed up, it typically quits. Unless you're having clutch shifting issues, don't worry about it.
