Drivetrain Upgraded software / Is it safe to reset ECU
Upgraded software / Is it safe to reset ECU
Hello,
I just bought a 2002 cooper S (R53). The car already have an upgraded pulley, intake and exhaust and I guess a software.
I had a check engine on the car and find a way to reset the ECU (see below) what I did but totaly forgot to double check if I will loose the upgraded software by doing it.
Anyone know if my reset make me loose the setting and get back factory setting? I don't want to blow my engine with more boost and not enough fuel in the mixture. I now have a P0138 code and the car seems to have more hesitation under acceleration, maybe it is just the time to requalibrate itself, but I prefer to ask.
Thanks for your help
How to Reset the ECU:
With the key in the ignition, but in the off position, press and hold down the odometer reset button with one hand, while holding the button down, switch the key in the ignition to position 1 (first click) with the other hand.
The screen will have a number and the word “tESt”.
Scroll through the numbers by pressing the odometer rest button, through to 19 and wait a moment. (Note: the number order is: 1,2,10,19)
The message will say 19 "L i-off", flash to "L i-on", and back to "L i-off" again. When "log i-off" appears, press the odometer rest button again. You are now in the system.
Scroll through to 21. tESt and wait a moment. 21.0 rESEt will come up. Press the button once.
Your gauges will now make some sounds and movements. Once the lights come back on start your car. You have now reset your ECU and your MINI is now ready to relearn the new mods and your driving style.

If your car has been reflashed the only way to loose the software is to have it reflashed again. The ECU can't just loose a tune. Unless the previous owner told you they had the ECU tuned, you may not have any tune in it.
As for your check engine light, find out what has failed, fix it then clear the fault, don't try just clearing the ECU the fault will end up coming back if it even clears.
