What do you think would be a fair price for a motor (without SC) with a bad rod bearing and scarred crank journal. This is a 40K mileage motor that went bad due to oil starvation.

well it would need the crank machined and the larger main bearings as well as a new rod and rod bearings. I am going through this right now and the bearings prices for the larger bore are almost twice the price. You can get more into the cost of parts that you might be able to find a good used engine. I would say a fair price on a usable block would be $300. Did you verify the cylinder walls are all ok? if not they will need to be machined out 20~40 over which also adds to the cost.
