Any one test WMI on MINI without tuning for it?

I am wondering if anyone has dyno'd the effectiveness of water injection on an application without tuning for it (the extra detonation prevention). I am looking at it to purely combat higher IAT's. Anyone have any ideas? I would later tune for it. But that is my current question.

If you aren't detonating now it's not going to do much for you. It will allow mods that would cause detonation without it though.

Turbo vs. Roots supercharger. The Roots is pretty inefficient and makes a ton of heat. Especially with the 17+ psi Im making. So heat reduction gains power. I am looking for something more empirical

i am gonna order the devils own kit..i am to battling heat with a 17% pulley...i gained and extra 10 horse just letting the car sit with a small fan on the intercooler, so you can imagine what meth/water injection should gain...

This was the reason I added a meth system to my car. I was not looking for as much of a gain as a way of keeping what power I already had on those hot So Cal days.

Here are some real world numbers for you.

Stop and go traffic in town after short stop to pick up parts.

IAT. 134

Enter fwy onramp , turn on meth and bang 4 gears while merging with traffic.

IAT. 66

The kicker was it was a 94 degree ambient day at the time. Your results may vary but it works for me.

I'll say this much, see my mod list below for my signature?
That entire list, minus the RMW header, got me (after an RMW tune) only 193HP. Don't misunderstand me, I'm in no way bashing Jan, I think he did a wonderful job personally, and am really thankful for his work on my Mini. I came away from the tune session with more than what I arrived with, so how could I complain? Jan truly is the man!

Anyways back to my point, while it was on the dyno, they did some test pulls at the end with my meth kit on, and then off. With it on, I actually lost about 5 to 10HP. Your mileage may vary of course, as I'm pretty sure my Mini should be putting down much higher HP numbers with the mods I have. So my point is basically that I probably have a problem that's not really presenting itself to me very plainly.

Jan did mention that I had an overboost code, so I replaced the header and cat with an RMW brand. I also found out later that the resonator on my exhaust had been leaking for quite some time, and it finally blew apart 2 weeks ago. So the Mini is still not 100%, and very likely wasn't 100% when I went into the tuning session with Jan. That's more than likely why I got lower HP numbers than the other folks who got tuned with far less mods. It was also a really hot day too, which I'm sure hampered it as well.

This probably doesn't help with your water/meth question, but I did want to share my water/meth results with you regardless.

wow silverblood, with those mods that is a very low number. I would definitely think something is/was up. How was the install on the AEM WMI? That was the kit I was looking to get.
Also I dont really worry about dyno numbers but about real world driving power. So after I have fully heated the engine and am running it through its paces in the hills.

The install was done by my mechanic, and one of the controllers had to be replaced. I used to hear the pump come on, but I never hear it anymore, probably the amount of engine noise has increased.

And yeah, I should be pulling well over 200HP with those mods, so there must be something going wrong somewhere. Going to have an oil change and the belts looked at this Saturday.

IDK, but it is a bit demoralizing. Others pulling way better numbers with less mods than myself. :(

"knock sensor"

Water injection was used in WWII on aircraft engines to postpone detonation (even with that leaded 130 octane fuel). IIRC, on some engines, the water injection was worth 100 HP and I think its main use was during takeoff.

Does anyone know if the Mini has a 'knock sensor'? On other makes of car, a knock sensor is utilized to protect the engine from the effects of detonation. It does so by retarding the ignition. So, on such engines, the water injection 'adds' HP by keeping the ignition timing advanced and allowing higher manifold pressure.

Just wonderin'...

yes, I'm unaware of any modern gas car that doesn't.

My car feels as if it loses 10-15hp between the cool morning drive(has to be no more than 80*) and stupid hot & humid drive home . I always wondered about H2O injection helping get my morning horsepower back in the humid midwest.
