Drivetrain Quaife Installers? HELP!
Can anyone recommend a shop to install a Quaife LSD in a Cooper S that is located anywhere remotely near Indiana? I want to get one installed before the 2004 autocross season starts, and I'm willing to do a bit of driving to get the work done, though it would be really nice if it was within a day's drive each way.
Thanks.

Everyone I know who has gotten a Quaife installed has had it done on the east coast. Cheese is right though, give Eric at Helix a call, he might know someone out your way who can do it.
BTW you have the silver S and silver beard? If so, We met at the last Peru pro - I was the Elec blue S, w/US Flag roof, #62 in STX -- you remember, the s l o w one.

sa and dp: since you are both reading this, herre is an update on the camber plate bearings. I have machined all the parts and have been waiting until I could take my own set of new type units apart after some road time. I disassembled them last week. I had been getting some groaning noises out of the bearing assembly on steering action and wanted to monitor the posible wear.
the units had about a total of 4,000 miles, two intense track days and five autocrosses.
wear was insignificant! but i am adding a dirt "boot", O-ring seals and a grease fitting for the ball joint and switching to a moly lube. the new babies have worked great.
You will be getting the new ball joints and a new "puzzle" piece next week.

jlm, Thanks again for the suggestions elsewhere and thanks for the update. Don't forget you have my full set of camber plates, minus the brace that I kept here. I'm curious to know what you thought of them.
David, You're thinking of Larry H. but I know him pretty well as he is quite active in the two regions that I am (Indy and CSCC). I'm stunned (soft of) that he is going to give up the horsepower and is moving to a Cooper for HS next year. I think he's getting serious about collecting trophies.
I've got other plans for my S, some of which may be moving me out of STX, but we'll see what develops.
Thanks again. Anyone else have experience with Midwest shops?

you had the typical polyurethane failure fom my puny design. I have since noted how much angular movement there is and its total range. what suprises me is how well the stock bearing and carrier work. that rubber surround get quite a workout.
the failures in my units were also in the ball bearings which developed detents in the raceways.
In your case, it also seems you overtightened the three clamp bolts.
all will be fixed with the new parts. they are very cool as well. I hesitated to use a spherical ball at first, since it doesn't offer the cushion of a rubber or polyurethane carriier, but can report no problems having used them on my own rig.

I appreciate your thoroughness. As this is off season, I am in no hurry, and may not put these on the car until late winter.
Thanks again for the report
