Actually, the patented Torque Sensing (Torsen, get it?) differential first appeared in the original Audi quattro, back about 1981 or so.

The torsen diff really is a drop in replacement for the MINI.

So far I'm loving mine.
That's great to hear as mine is going in this week!

Some new bearings for the diff are the only other things that are needed.
Are you doing the work your self or having a shop do it?

thanks for the reply.

My shop will do the job, the only things is holding me back is that the dealer just replaced the clutch, fly wheel, pressure plate less than 3k miles ago under warranty at 49,000 mile.

what do u think? my car is pretty modded, and is getting a RMW remote tune for all my mods in a few days.

I would say that if you think having a lsd justifies all the labor that goes into installing the unit then go for it. If not save the coin.

Just ordered mine. Finding out I had to do control arm bushing mean I was going to be about a 1/3 of the way there anyway.

My mechanic is doing mine. The engine and tranny are out of the car and I will have him take some picks of the install. I'll be out of town for the next 3 weeks while he is doing the work but will post when I come back.

As for the clutch I went with a Spec Stage 2.

Where can one source these new bearings? Directly from Torsen?

Detroit tuned, mini mania, Way motor Werks or local parts store. I would just make sure they are made in the USA or Germany and not Mexico or China.

part number 501349

For those who havent seen it the Torsen is slightly different from the OBX/Quaife. Mine is dated 5/27/2009. In the third picture you can see a silver screw, and about a 1/3 of the way around from that one there is another. That is all that holds the unit together until you bolt the ring gear on, so I dont think there is any preloading going on like the OBX/Quaife. That means it is probably using a different design.

No missing pictures. But if you want a photo of another part I can grab it. I hope to have the transmission out tomorrow, and the diff installed with the transmission bolted up the next day.

I am following this indeed. I have an '11 r56 and the Torsen LSD sounds like a great idea. I will have to find out if it will work in my car first, but please keep us posted on install completion and driving characteristics.
