HELP! Dieseling Problem

For the last week when I go to start the car up in the morning it instantly starts dieseling (not sure if that's exactly the correct word for it) to the point I have to turn off the engine and retry it several times while trying to give it gas. It usually takes two or three attempts to get it going. It seems like it is flooded/choking on too much gas. Does this sound like anything familiar to anyone? Could it be bad gas?

It eventually starts, but after a couple trys and some frantic accelerator action. Still think its the fuel pump?

Do you know if it was a fuel pump in the tank and/or engine? How long did it take to get replaced? I ask because I have to drive 200 miles to a dealership.

not sure if i understand your first question. my fuel pump was bad and had a leak...it took the dealership a few hours to take care of it (depending if they have a fuel pump in stock at the dealership)...if not they'll have to order it. if they are moderately busy that day, should take only a few hours.

My first question has to do with me hearing that there are two separate fuel pumps: One in the engine and one in the fuel tank. I was hoping it was the fuel tank so it would be potentially easier to fix. that may not be the case though

I would think the one on the motor (the HPFP) would be easier to replace. However, if you're out of warranty....get ready to pay $$$$...they are not cheap to replace.

I am still under warranty Do you think this is the issue as well? (I've also read about carbonization) I did seafoam it a couple times in the last few months. It seems to happen only in the morning (cold I guess).

Good! The HPFP's are like $1k!

It could be...

By 'dieseling' I assume you mean the motor is like turning over/barely running by itself, with no spark or fuel? My car did that during Seafoam treatments...it's kinda creepy.

Generally though with fuel pump issues, the car has trouble starting when cold (although mine never did...). One day mine just went into limp mode, and the internal code it threw was related to the HPFP. It was only putting out about half the PSI it should have been. I was also having big problems with pinging during this time, which went away completely after the pump was replaced.

However, I also did my first Seafoam treatments just prior, so its hard to say if it was the carbon buildup or the lack of output from the fuel pump which was causing it.

FYI - I just got my car back from the dealer and they said the car barely starting/dieseling on cold mornings is not from my fuel filter going out (it checked out okay), but from the free flowing aftermarket cat causing the O2 sensors to read irregularly - causing the issue. Not sure if this is the problem or not, but everything else on the car checked out okay.

for the sake of mentioning it.....have you checked that all four connections to it are tight (both sensors, the top and the bottom of the pipe) with no leaks? My idle is glass smooth.......I do BG 44k and seafoam every 5k...just did my third treatment.....

I haven't checked them but will this weekend. It's not that my idle isn't smooth though. It idles just fine once it gets going. And, my issue only happens on the coldest mornings for some reason. It seems like the car is choking and starving for gas. I push the accelerator to give it more gas and it then usually fires up as normal and runs normal from then on. This is why the bad fuel pump made sense. BTW - what is BG 44K??

Liquid gold.....

Stuff worked miracles for resurrecting some of my old Mazda rotories (they just crap carbon all over everything). Really good pro stuff. Not cheap, but really good stuff. Best pricing is usually on ebay motors.
