Tuning engine

How does a tune affect engine longevity? Does it affect the warranty?

SHould not effect longevity but will almost certainly effect warranty! I can't think of a dealer who will service a vehicle under warranty with an altered ECU

A tune can certainly affect longevity. It can overstress internal engine components. BMW could easily make ECU and other tweaks to generate more power but at the expense of engine longevity. Of course sometimes these decisions are based on marketing plans and not engineering.

I think Mini restricted/detuned the MCS engine from the factory so that they can make $$ on the "Stage 1 kit" by removing the restrictions. So i think it depends on what you want to do-just tune the engine and leave everything else stock, I think it's pretty safe since the modified tune will be similar or much the same as the JCW Stage 1 tune with only approx. gains of 20hp/20tqe. If however aftermarket parts are installed: larger IC, larger turbo, etc...in which case the hp will be significantly increased to the JCW factory car levels and beyond then the engine will have to have upgraded internals otherwise it may affect the longevity. It is of course just my opinion.

If the dealer discovers the modified tune (which is highly unlikely) they will void the warranty simply because they want you to spend the $2K+ on their Stage 1 kit. But I know of some dealers in my area that are aware of modified tunes and service cars anyway.

This is especially true with turbo engines, add boost=shorter engine life.

Ok you tune your car. They might or might not warranty your car but they are not going to refuse to work on your car. They make money off working on cars. Tune who cares just realize that there is that possibility that they won't warranty it. Also it depends on your relationship with said dealer becuase the more you are in there spending money the better chance they will warranty it.

The motor will be fine...however, turbo life should be affected. Trust me our tiny K03's are not meant to run 17+ psi for 100k miles. Way out of their efficiency and operating range. Ask Audi and VW guys

But all the power and fun is worth it cuz a) most of us don't keep a car that long b) if the turbo does fail down the road, it just gives a perfect excuse to upgrade with a bigger one

Not true... I can think of a couple that I have been to that will gladly warranty stuff even knowing the ECU is tuned. If you come in with a blown turbo or motor, well then of course they will likely not warranty it.

Not true my dealer asked, so they would not reflash and ruin my tune (you call tell by look at my MINI that it has probably been modified a lot). They did all the warranty work no problem.

This does not mean they will fix something that my mods caused, but they try and work with clients as much as they can.
