Drivetrain Alta shortshift questions...revisited
Still trying to figure out which way to go on the shifter decision and I still have some questions pertaining to the one by Alta.
1) Can the Alta be adjusted to full reduction and still use the dust cover? If not, what's the greatest reduction you can get with the cover on?
2) At full reduction, how much does the shifter drop below stock height?
3) Is the shaft stout enough for the shaft adjustment piece to be drilled and pinned once the ideal setting is found?
4)if the adjustibility function is kept, can the shifter be adjusted in the car, or does it have to be removed to perform this task?

Thanks for the response, D. I've checked out the B&M and it looks good, but I was trying to find out these things about the Alta before I decided which way to go.
Strange thing is, I know we have a couple sponsor's selling these units. You'd think one of them would answer a few simple technical questions for the forum.

I don't know, man. Your answers don't seem to be out there for some bizarre reason. I've seen you ask these questions a few times now. Either you're just having bad luck, and the people who can answer you aren't logging in on the right days, or else not very many of the Alta kits are actually being installed in cars (that might tell you something, right there). In any case, good luck! I'm looking forward to the B&M kit in my Cooper in a couple of weeks (found out it's on backorder).
I have had the Alta in my car for over 6 months with no problems.
-you can only retain the stock dust cover at the longer throw range settings. I use mine at mid-setting and ditched the dust cover entirely.
-when you increase the throw ratio (shorter shift), you lower the shifter stem a bit, probably 1" total range, plus the shaft is about 3/4" shorter anyway.
-drilling and pinning would weaken the shaft an uncomfortable amount, imo
-adjustments can be made in the car by lifting the boot.
-the stock **** won't stay retained; I drilled and tapped mine, through the leather area and have set screwed it to the alta shaft.
*I edited the numbers after checking my car*

If you have more questions about the the Alta and B&M, you should talk to Randy over at http://www.webbmotorsports.com/forums, or give him a call over there...

jlm -- thanks for coming up with the answers! Kudos to you!
KiLO -- yes, I could have just called someone who dealt with these shifters, but I felt the information covered in the questions would be nice shared with the rest of the forum. After all, isn't that one of the reasons for why were here?
