Supercharger upgrade?

Are there any like, upgraded superchargers?
I don't really know about this stuff, I am learning =]
But is upgrading the pulley all that is neccisary? or are there other superchargers that would be better (with an upgraded pulley on it too)
are there more powerful superchargers? or are they pretty much the same?
worth doing?
not worth doing?

If I were to replace mine, new stock one? or other?

Thanks!

Best bang for the buck upgrade is a bigger pulley....usually a 15,17,or19% reduction....each has different pluses and minuses...if you ride the rpm red line or track your car, the 15% is best, but if you are more conservitve, the larger reductions bring on full boost at lower rpm's.
A few cars have been modified to run bigger superchargers or turbos's or even a combo of the two. Generaly these are good project cars, but IMO thet might not make great daily drivers.
Re-building the stock SC with a port and a polish should give you more boost....better than the stock replacement.
Looking at your signature....bigger injectors and a custom tune would be next IMO.

Not sure how much money you want to spend or how crazy you want to go...but like Zippy said, you can do plenty of things to your current motor without changing the s/c.

But if you want to change your s/c....

Get your bank account ready, call up RMW, and do a Rotrex supercharger kit. It's quite amazing.

I also vote on getting a tune from Jan. Hopefully if all goes well I will have him tune my MINI this summer.

I would be interested in getting a tune by RMW, but I can't just go to california to get it.
Does anyone know if I could get a good tuning from someone (jan) at like a AMVIV or something like that, vegas wouldnt be thaaat far.

Thanks a bunch for the info =]

These days you do not really want to go to ca for a tune party....state officials might stop it on ya...your best bet might be a remote tune or maybe a non-ca tune party!!
I would bet $$$ that lots of tunes will be done in Vegas......at this point it would be you best bang fo the buck item. If you do a new head or maybe a cam....it will be smaller incremental improvements.
How many miles on your supercharger? If it is pretty high in miles I would rebuild it before the tune...same for getting bigger injectors...JCW can be driven without a tune....others should be installed just before the tune.

Jan is doing remote tunes and with some great success especially for some overseas MINI drivers. It's another option to consider.

Yeah, I was thinking of doing the cam too, with the tune.
and now Injectors too.

My supercharger just barely past 80k miles.
It is only hitting 10 psi max boost.
I am worried it is a worn supercharger, but will get a new bypass valve first.
Where could I get it rebuilt? and how much?

Thanks again! Justin

With these could he tune with the injectors and new cam in mind?
I just think in person on the dyno would be ideal though.

Getting a rebuilt is most likely you best option....Dealers sell rebuilt units for $1600 or so, and new for $2200...if you can get one....they seem to be getting scarce.
Much more cost effective options are......

http://www.stiegemeier.com/rebuild.html
Front-Drive Rebuild Plus Water Pump Drive Rebuild $795
Blower Porting, Front-Drive Rebuild, and Water Pump Drive Rebuild $895

A few vendors also have machine shops that do good work too!! These guys are very well known in the Mustang world...their prices kinda reflex it.

One of my Favorite vendors, WayMotorWorks does Superchargers too...I guess he does not have fixed pricing, and prices them based upon the work that needs to be done to the SC to return them to full operating condition. If it is mechanically in good condition, I'm not sure, but this option could be pretty attractive!!

http://www.psesuperchargers.com/
Another high quality re-builder...not sure of their prices. Hav heard of a few folks using them, no problems, but one said it too longer than expected.

Supercharger technologies...Old Town FL...a vendor here for a VERY short time.
sells lots of rebuilt units on E-bay....
...their website has been down for a while...these guys might be the cheapest....BUT.....the word seems to be getting out that they have a bunch of failures due to using short-cuts. Their warranty is great...but if you have to pay for 9 hours of labor (even if you don't!!) and be without your car for a couple days, maybe a week or more....saving $200 is not worth it!! There are simply better options IMO.
That having been said....lots of folks have had great luck with these folks....they appear to also ship/overhaul units for CanadianSupercharger.com for US customers.
Feeling Lucky?! I guess their short-cuts have to do with the changing of the captive bearings that are around the water pump drive....they apparently use glue that can fail....resulting in failure of the SC. There is info on the supercharger rattle thread....just in the last month or so...no need to read all bazillion pages!!

I haven't used them or any of them as of yet....just been doing some research knowing I will someday!! Good Luck!!

Wow!
Thank you for sharing all of that with me.
I just wish it was a little less pricey haha.

I will look into these for sure.
so at 80k its time for a rebuild for sure?
I still want to see if maybe my BPV will give me little more power back.

again, thanks for all that information.
Justin.

I've seen different numbers tossed around for SC life expectancy...mostly about 110,000 miles....with no pulley. It would not surprise me if your was at the low end of the boost scale by now....but some have lasted much longer. I lived in CO for a while...and if your part of UT is as dusty as it was there....even a tiny bit of dirt getting by the filer will act like sandpaper and reduce the efficiency of it.

One thing yo could do....by a SC on E-BAY or the marketplace....the cheapest ones go for 200-300$ and would be a good core (add the rebuilding cost)...good low mileage ones from wrecked cars can be had for about 500-600$...but buyer beware. The best ones are the coated ones from 05'+...the rotors are black, it is the same coating as on the earlier JCW ones...all cars 05+ got it...was good for about 5 hp more.

OKOK......Bigger reduction......= smaller pulley. thanks for the correction!! (unless you are talking about an OVERSIZED CRANK PULLEY!!)I would hate for anybody to get the wrong idea!! Funny thing was after I types all that crap...I saw his signature...saying he had a 15%....might help someone else...so I left it!!

Maybe I need to drink more at my computer!! Might help out my spelling and typing a bit....or at least make it so I don't care!!

So $900 for a full rebuild and port? Wonder what can be expected of the "porting " performance wise .

Seems like supercharger life is such a toss up.....I've known people that have run the same s/c for 130K with no issues at all. Personally speaking mine has 90K on it going strong. What I'll prob do when the time come is work with AutoXCooper's rebuild service. About $900 out the door http://autoxcooper.com/mini_cooper_s...d_service.html

Just passed 110k with a JCW pulley many track days and daily red line flogging. No signs of problems. IMO the "upgrade" most likely to shorten the lifespan is an oil catch can. Don't do it.

Esp since all it does is stop the oil from getting into the intercooler and intake of the car....

How does an OCC do anything to hurt the engine or s/c life span? All it is, is an acculimantor for oil bypass...

Tazio, where are the facts or proof to back up your statement?

PSE charged me $795 for port and polish and all up graded bearings, but that was in 06 and they where in Calif. They did a good job, but it takes a long time.
