yet another CAI question

Done searches and research, but can't seem to find a definitive answer to this question. If I've read correctly, there's more performance gain to be had with a CAI like ALTA or DDM if you remove the stock hood scoop cover than if you leave it in place. My question is, do you get ANY gains with these intakes if you leave the hood scoop as is? I'd prefer not to run around with it open because I don't want the engine compartment getting all crudded up. But if all you get out of that setup is a little more sound, then it's probably not worth it.

I put a K&N intake on a PT Cruiser (normally-aspirated), and the improvement was immediately noticeable without any other changes. I'd be surprised if that were not the case on the MINI; but then forced induction is a different animal, and I'm seeing a lot of feedback suggesting that that might be the case.

Also somewhat related, has anyone used the K&N filter element in the stock air box? Can't seem to find any info on that here at all. Impressions?

Thanx...

Hi Ed, the DDM Full Race CAI found on the middle of this link http://www.autoxcooper.com/ddm_turbocooper.html will give you more of what you want without much more if any increase in bay mess.

Thanks for the info, but that's a little kinda more than I was looking to spend ... How does the regular DDM Street Intake do by itself without the ram air scoop?

Hello Ed, I'll start off with this, CAI is not cold, at best it's not hotter then the outside temp once the car is moving. Anytime you open the air box you allow hot engine air into the system. However the ECU will more then adjust for that change in temp.

The main reason to open up the air box if for sound, more of it, and in theory more air mass.

I think you will find the K&N or ALTA panel drop in to work just fine.

IMHO it's going to be hard to "feel" more power out of any CAI without seeing it on a dyno too.

Ed,

Any of the CAI's you mention will get u just as hot of air as you now get. One of these might get you a little better airflow than stock but very little else. Check out Defenders of Speed (NAM Sponsor). This will get you cold air = about10HP
