Drivetrain Turbo a R53?
Turbo a R53?
Anybody ever thought about turbo-ing a R53? I have a T3 turbo and intercooler, but don't really think it's the best idea.
I'm pushing around 18.5psi with just a CAI, -19% pulley, 380 JCW injectors Stock intercooler, RMW cam, and RMW tune. I'm happy, but mine is an '03 so my gearing isn't all there. ehhh

there are many many more r53 turbos out there, both twin charged and turbo only.

Ya I know about the whole twin charging thing.... I just don't think it's efficient. Yes you do get the boost form low rpm from the blower, and then boost from the turbo at higher rpms. But i'm talking about using almost everything stock (block, head, pistons, rods, valves, retaining springs...) and turbo it? Is it worth it? Can there be more efficient power with the right turbo set-up?
No crazy HP numbers, just something for the track?

For the same amount of boost pressure a turbo will give you more power due to less parasitic "drag" on the engine. In other words you can leave everything the same, the only big adjustment you need to make (aside from all the stuff required on any turbo system) is an electric water pump. The stock water pump is driven off the supercharger so when you get rid of the SC you need the electric.
I dont know of anyone who makes a turbo manifold for these cars, so you either make your own yourself or contract that out. The rest is fairly straight forward fabrication.

The supercharger pressurizes the air with strictly W_out from the engine, whereas the turbo uses a lot of Q_out from the exhaust gas a and a little bit of W_out from the engine. Since the Q_out from the engine doesnt get used for anything anyway, the system gets you more gain with less loss.
In other words, if you werent tuning the engine for all out power, you would probably end up with better mileage from the turbo.

Building a car like the one you are talking about would be a good weekend car....but IMO not a good reliable daily driver. They usually require lots of tinkering to keep running just right.....
