Drivetrain How much hp would a K & N air filter add on a Mini Cooper S?
Andrewsky,
Aloha and welcome to MCO.
This is a good question and I don't know if anyone has bothered to dyno a stock car with the K&N filter as the only mod. Why? Because it may cost $70 to dyno the car and maybe K&N doesn't want anyone to know the results. It has been discussed here in the past that many of the sales of K&N is on brand name awareness and not on the merit of their product.
Recently I added K&N filters to a 1999 Toyota Camry and 2001 Honda Odyssey. I found no difference in power, drivablity or mpg at all and the filters were expensive. The advantage is you get to clean out the old filters and reoil them and not have to buy paper filters.
Some people have posted that they think the K&N filters are actually more restrictive and cause other problems with the oil particles getting into the engine through the air intake.
I would say if you are looking for improving the airflow to the MCS and you wish to keep the stock airbox and just add a drop in filter then besides the K&N then consider a good foam filter like the Alta filter, or unifilter (Webbmotorsports) or the Green performance air filter (for MCS $52.34 at Turnermotorsport.com).
The HP (maybe at best +2 to 3) gains are modest but the airflow might be a little better. It's still stealthy and easy to install or replace.
Chapter 2- cold air intakes for the MCS.

I have a K&N drop-in filter and JCW on my MCS. Didn't get to sample the K&N by itself but I would also guess it adds 2-3hp. My S2000 has a K&N - it added 2hp and 2 lb-ft of torque verified by back-to-back dyno runs with the stock filter.
