Running too cold

Fitted a 82deg C thermostat and took the car out for a spin.

On the motorway, the coolant temp dropped to below 65deg C, on the country back roads the temp went up to the mid 70's deg C and sat idling on the drive and the temp only went up to 83ish.

Changing the thermostat, I presume wouldn't drop the temp by that much also I guess running the car at these temps isn't going to be good for it.

Before with the standard thermostat the temp stayed around the 93-100deg C mark.

Any ideas?

Yea, you are running way to cold. Constant temps should be around 100-105C

Yeah that's pretty cold. My Scangauge indicates coolant temps between 195 and 205F (90-96C) usually centering in the middle of the range. Running the engine cold means the ECU may try to keep you in warm-up mode which will use more fuel. It's also keeping the oil cooler which will result in more viscous friction.

Did you get the system bled after draining some to get the new thermostat in? You could still have an air bubble.

that would more likely cause a heat condition

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open. Take it out and test it in a pot holding it with some tongs as you heat water up to a boil. If it works, then maybe you put it in wrong.

What's an 82DEG C Thermostat ?

Is that the same thing as an 180 o Thermostat ?

thx mzero . so looks like it's stuck all right . but how long at freeway? it shoulda closed and the temp woulda come up, but not necessarily on a quick on off freeway . i'd let it idle and see if hoses both go hot . or even out in temp indicating coolant flow thru block . then if it is working; is it too cold? do you live in fl. tx.?

I've refitted the old standard (195deg F) thermostat and refilled the cooling system.

However, the low coolant temp issue is still evident as when i'm driving around @ 30mph the coolant temp is @ 180 deg F but on the motorway the temp drops to @ 153 deg F. The time spent on and off the motorway works out to @ 15mins each.

I've checked the thermostat housing for any cracks and the thermostat worked before it was taken off, leaving me at a loss as to why the temps are soooo low.

Any ideas?

Also, the outside temp was 68 deg F.
