chrono pack oil guage accuracy

has any one any idea of the accuracy of the chrono pack oil temp guage

my oil always seems a little high temp wise,
esp on track days 130ish degrees c is not unknown

do i need another guage? or will it tell me the same thing?
so should i spend the money reducing the temp rather than measuring it twice

That is accurate. It translate to 266 degrees Fahrenheit. I had seen this temp plenty of times during hot track days. I since purchased an RMW oil cooler, and along with a 180 degree thermostat, my oil temps are 190-220F and do not go higher. Driving on the street I see 170-190F. I also use 10-50w oil.

I've come to the conclusion that the Chrono Pack Oil Temp Gauge reading is a calculated value by the ecu. No one, I repeat, no one has been able to find a temp sensor for this gauge and not even MINI techs have the slightest idea what makes it work. Yes, the gauge responds. Yes, it probably gives a representative idea of oil temp but, as for real sump temp of the oil, I seriously doubt its accuracy. I welcome info. to the contrary.

old topic comes back

recently stuck an m7 thermostat into my 20% m45 mini

and now my "chrono oil temp" is much lower

so the ecu is not calculating from rpm

i think its now taking a best guess based on water temps....

I am guessing they are using RPM, water temp and other data to make the calculation. With enough data they "should" be able to be fairly accurate, but I question the oil temp accuracy at the extreme ends of the scale or under more unusual circumstances.

Yup, you're right.

I have the same thing, my oil always shows on the chrono gauge a little high temp... on the track I saw 270F and on the street 170-190F. I use Castrol 10 - 60 oil and I have oil cooler... Is that normal? should I buy the M7 180 degree thermostat?
