Alta tensioner stop install ?'s

Hey everyone,
I just received an Alta tensioner stop today....the instructions from Alta say to remove ALOT of parts from the engine including the supercharger pulley! Is it really necessary to remove all these parts?? I was under the impression that you can just remove the pass fender liner and slip it on through the wheel well. no?? Anyone know of a place that rents out the belt tension release tool?? Seems stupid to buy the tool for $100 to use it once or twice! Thanks everyone...hope to hear some good advice.

Steve

Correct, I put one on a month ago as well as a belt, remove the right front wheel, and the fender liner and slip it on through the wheel well.
It is fairly simple, I made my own tensioner tool.

I removed the right front wheel and fender liner. Was 10 mins to do and then loosen the screw and slide on the tensioner stop. Very easy. Alta's method is too complex.

Yep no need to even use a tensioner tool. Even helped a friend do it w/o removing the fender liner.

kewl that's what I thought...thanks everybody. I was going to change the belt too while in there putting the stop on. I just wish I knew how you guys did it without using the tensioner tool...I dont even get how that freakin thing even works! No one knows a place that rents it out though do they?

Do you have a club locally? Most clubs have at least one member with one.

And you want to put on a new 535 NAPA belt with the 15% you have.

Careful with the Alta stop. Mine is suddenly missing from the engine?! I think its where it only bolts on to one bolt and worked its way loose due to the rubber bushing under it.

They work good just keep an eye on it.

Actually I have a 17% and that was the next thing I was going to ask you guys...there seems to be alot of confusion as to what belt to run for what size reduction pulley.

You must get that 65 belt, 69 is too big for 17% even though that's what it states on the Alta website.

i believe www.autoxcooper.com rents out tensioner tools for free. if you want to own one of your own...as youll need it again with every belt change..there are a couple on eBay right this second for about half the price of a new one...

heres autox one... 15 bux to ship, 100 refund once u return in 30days. and you gota pay to ship it back of course...but not a bad deal.

I just installed mine and now it's gone, in 2 days! The bolt that holds the tension damper is now gone. Any idea on what that bolt is? Do I need a whole new assembly? Can I just replace the bolt?

HELP!!!

Ok, talked to mini parts guy. It is a 6x35 hex bolt. He said run to Lowes and you should be good. Still nervous!

Sorry to jump on this thread, but it was the closest to my issue.

Thanks

I don't think you tightened it properly. I have had this tensioner stop on my car for more than 4000 miles and it's still there.

use electrical tape and wrap the tensioner stop once or twice and it should be fine.

nice tip Mike, I still haven't even gotten around to changing my belt and putting this thing on. Summer was a total bust last year...really got nothing accomplished on the car But I'm waiting for the warm weather to come back around here so I can finish up some projects I never started! LOL

I attempted to put the one from Way Motor Works on and thought I needed the tool to take the tension off. Once the wheel liner is out you cant just throw the tensioner stop on there due to the sub frame in between the wheel well and the pulley. How do you do it with 2 people and no tool?

hmmm wish I had done mine already so I could help you out....did you try to get to reach down from up top and have a friend guide your hand from underneath? Maybe you can get a better angle on it from up top but obviously you won't be able to see what you're doing hence having the buddy there to help guide you. Just a thought....

I just put one in, and it was cake. 13mm ratcheting wrench helped a lot, but a regular box wrench works too.

You did it by yourself? How did you take tension off the belt?
