Drivetrain Ported SC, good for 10% HP gain?

fwiw, the power bump doesn't seem to be what it is for the Cobras and the like with the larger SCs. For those who are interested, these are the guys that did the M7 ported SCs from a while back. I'm thinking that you're not gonna see 20 hp out of this. FWIW, Endyn does this work as well, and there's another shop or two (don't remember the names right now) that do it as well that you can find if you search (here).
If you dig a little deeper, there are coatings that can be done and the like. Coatings help close the gaps between the roters and the case, and can decrease leakage and reversion.
Some of the companies close the noise reduction ports. This will increase both noise and boost, but IATs will climb a bit with this mod as well. I don't remember just how much.
Gotta love the internet.... This was a lively debate about 3-4 years ago...

Also, maybe I just don't get it, but wouldn't porting a s/c in turn descrease the amount of boost that it is capable of producing?
No...
just like everything that's mass produced, benefits can be had by improveing surfaces, removing casting flash and the like. So you get rid of turbulence sources etc, get rid of the sould ports, and get some gains. It's just that there's no good data for the M45 on real improvements like there are for the bigger V8s.
With hindsight, I'd say blow it off till you're getting your stocker rebuilt, then think about getting it optimized at the same time.

I remember those guys. Such lively debates! Ingsoc and JLM going at it!

Finding HP isn't hard or expensive depending on how much you want.
Pulley
cam
Head
header
exhaust
Tune
The amount of HP to be found doing more then this just isn't worth it. If you want more then the above will give it's going to get $$$.

What's really interesting...
is that while there was a lot of learning that happened way back when (and in internet time, that can be a recent as a few months), many of the lessons that were learned was forgotten by the "collective". Seems like information just doesn't have the life it once had.

if i added correctly, there is about 8k + in engine upgrades alone not including labor, for what...300whp or a lil more? you do need other mods to put that power down which i havent added as well.
ill agree with you on it being easy findings HP but not the expensive part unless you got fat pockets or big credit card limits.
um i did "dude" how can someone say "The amount of HP to be found doing more then this just isn't worth it" but has done just that.
and since when is putting a head/cam on a car a "basic" mod. intake,exhaust,and pulley is basic in my eyes.
im not getting on LB b/c he's one of a few on here i respect. but modding the mini is by any means not cheap to certain people who are less off than others.

I guess...
there are lots of ways to read that. It's could be that things get real expensive after that, or if he knew then what he knows now, he'd have stopped there. None of that really matters though....
but it comes down to the fact that you won't get 20 hp from an upgraded M45, and it's nice that someone seems to have found a way to repair SCs with shot rear drive gears.

Sorry Fast you did take my post wrong. Yes I have been fortunate to be able to afford to do allot of things to my car. No I'm not rich, I have four kids a wife and an ex-wife
. Fortunately for me the second time around I married a beautiful and smart lady who makes as much as I I've spent money on things that got me nothing and if I can stop someone from making the same mistake then great.
I'm talking from experience and If I can share that to keep people from chasing their tails I will. Lets break it down.
Pulley = $100-200
Cam = $350-500
Header = $200-1000
Head = $1300-3600
Exhaust = $200-1500
Tune = $400-$1000
As you can see prices very wildly. You can build based on $ you have to spend. Along the way you will learn, have fun and make more power. Again done right it's relatively not expensive compared to modding other European cars. We don't drive Honda's. I new going in that moding a mini was going to cost a little more. The other thing you can do to save money is to do as much of the work as your ability allows. Contrary to popular belief I do a lot of my own work. I've been moding cars for over 25 years.
My build has been sooo much fun that the money I've spent has been well worth it to me. I just finished the suspension and brakes and the car is now just awesome. I was looking at it last night and I truly think I'm done. The car is exactly what I envisioned it could be 6 years ago.
So like I said, I'm just trying to help.

i just noticed where you live. I just spoke with a service advisor over at santa margarita ford just today for a warranty claim they submitted to me. kinda funny

BTW - you know your never "done"
If you want to lie to yourself that's okay BUT the WHOLE community

shame LB.
If you actually do stop it is because there is NOTHING left to do
. On a serious note, LB is correct that gains can be had under a variety of budgets. Most important is that the road maps lie within this forum on proper order, parts combos, what is tried and true and an occasional good deal in the marketplace. LB has certainly contributed in this regard.
I'm just waiting for him to part out his car
.
