This being fitted soon!

This is the GT28r which is going to be fitted to my Cooper S

The software solution is sorted. There are 2 companies i know of in the UK who can/who want to do the mapping!

Will i be the first on the forums ? Who else is going for a bigger turbo ?

That should be fun, I'm always a little shocked by how small the factory snail is on the MINI, especially with the GT28r sitting next to it, it'll be interesting to see how the powerband shifts with the new turbo. What "supporting" mods will you be doing besides a tune? I assume some sort of aftermarket boost controller is obvious but will the factory injectors have enough overhead with this or will they be running at near 100% duty cycle?

The standard turbo is a snail isnt it But its surprised me over the past year, being quite tuneable and powerful.
Personally i prefer the usual turbo power band of 3000-7000rpm and that way i get the strong midrange surge with the full on top end power and <3000rpm will do nicely for town/daily driving.

I will post a list up of the supporting mods later today/early tomorrow. Its mainly little bits and pieces but your right one of them is certainly a boost controller - I honestly havent decided between a manual boost controller or an electronic one but i will do over the next week

There is one cooper s turbo thats had a bigger turbo fitted in the UK, that i know of, and the tuner who did the fitting/mapping said the standard injectors work very well for 300 - 300+bhp (theres not much info about this car as its a one off used for racing) but like you say how close will they be to their full duty cycle, only time will tell i guess

Is Will @ Performance Torque going to give this a go? I heard that the Audi S3 injectors can be used but I might be wrong!

Hey don't dog the little turbo! Big turbo = more lag.

This should be a very cool project! How much of an increase are expecting in power? AND... are you going to mod any of the engine internals?

Thats the very man indeed! Ive not looked into injectors at the moment but you could be right, would be easy to get ahold of them!

I will not dog the little fella again

Roughly im expecting 270-290whp (in UK terms 300+bhp). Once this kit is fitted and setup the next step (after many many thousands of miles of driving) will be engine internals, uprated clutch and gearbox however for now im sticking with standard internals!

Starting end of this month and it all comes down to money and what i can afford to buy.
BOV will be slotted in basically where the hks one goes (for those of you who have one fitted) but i will be using Greddy one.

Yeah mate thats the gt28r/gt2560r!

Good God! A 300bhp MINI would be ridiculous. Better get a bigger spoiler while you're at it!

Personally I'd rather go with a manual boost controller due to it's overall simplicity and the fact that if it's under the hood I'm less likely to fiddle with it than it I have a shiny LCD display with a + button sitting in my car.
I don't even know how big the R56 injectors are really but for your goals they probably will do OK, maybe some meth for added insurance.

More lag is true, but if you're running out of breathe by 5500rpms, peak boost at 2000rpms doesn't do much good on the track.

Very nice, congratulations I want to do the same!!!

Is that the Atp turbo kit or another one?

Can you do me a favor and take some pictures of the turbo to see where the intake and the intercooler tube goes and the stock solenoid valve. To see what do I have to buy to install this on my car.

You can clock the turbine housings of turbos, think of it as separating it in half and making the I/C discharge face the direction you need it to go.

Awesome man, glad to see someone playing with their R56 finally. If I wasn't a busy & starving college student, I'd be doin the same!

However, I think you are going to find that it's going to be a lot harder to get it to work right than you think with this car. But...definitely keep us posted on everything along the way!

Any idea on how much boost you plan on running?

Its not the atp kit, atp use the gt28rs however i will be using a couple of their parts as their parts fit a couple different turbos for our car I will update with pictures of how im connecting everything up in due course and the stock boost solenoid/valve comes out with the standard turbo i.e you wont have one anymore and the bigger turbos dont have holes for one

Thats a good piece of info I didnt know that but luckily mines points the way i want it to go!

Been there, know how it feels!!

The mapping side wont be a problem. I have alot of confidence in Will at P-Torque.

Not honestly sure about boost levels, i guess it comes down to what power/torque is being put out at a given boost level but i would guess it to be around 1 bar (14.5 psi)

I will keep this thread updated as i move along.. Plenty pictures etc and some lovely vids when im done

It's very nice to see someone finally pull the trigger and see the real potential of the beastly R56 prince engine.

I don't care how you are measuring the HP, be it BHP or WHP, but both numbers you spit out are astonishing. I think I will be satisfied when my exhaust gets here, and maybe an ECU, but man... 280whp would just be incredible. You'd be leaving 135i/335i's, Mustang GTs, etc, in the dust...

That would be embarrassing... for them... 335i speed, with the handling of a MINI... I drool...

Thumbs up on pulling the trigger! Can't wait to see the results!

It will be incredible. fyi a 335i has a power to weight of roughly 200bhp/tonne whereas with the gt28r fitted my mini will be somewhere around the 265bhp/tonne mark - not far from porsche 911 turbo territory

PS Mustangs are lovely! The noise from that V8 when your sitting in the car is intimidating to say the least

Will keep you posted

If by trunk you mean attaching it to the manifold via an adaptor plate then yes in the trunk

Delicious! That's not a R53 block, is it? It honestly looks like an Iron Ecotec.
You will have to make sure that small animals and neighborhood children don't get sucked into that thing when you drive by...

VW 1.8t

And yes, I have a chihuahua, I need to watch him around the car. The mini will be getting a turbo eventually most likely.
