Am currently in search of cheap go-fast mods and just thought about subject method (very popular among Miata drivers). Has anyone ever done such mods to his/her MINI airbox? Am thinking about drilling a few holes in the airbox just upstream of the filter, in the hope of bypassing all the curvers in the intake duct.

Would definitely be interested in your opinions.

Yes, it has been done. Here is the how to:

Might be not legal for SCCA racing purposes. Check with the authorities before doing it.

Or consider the alta intake with hose for $260

Or do your own cold air intake and mod. (done by Cooperspeed an MCO member)

Hai Le,

Welcome to MCO.

The closest thing we have to a swiss cheese airbox mod (we did that on the VW side too) is to drill holes into the partition between the airbox and the cowl. That mod is referred to on the site as the MINI Motorsport airbox mod or I guess now, the WEBB Motorsport airbox mod.

Thanks for all your replies.

Forgot to mention however that mine is a N/A Cooper; the mods as described seem to be for the MCS.

Again, thanks.

Hai_Le, from what I've seen on here, there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference between the airboxes on the MC v MCS. Of course, I may be way off base here.

The Web Motorsport airbox mod is intended to be used with aftermarket intakes only. This is because the stock box won't take advantage of the extra air openings. Thus I believe it matters whether you have the S or not. The airbox mod was designed for the S.
