exhaust

Okay, so i'm a newbie with a stupid question!! On most of the after market exhaust systems, is the smaller round "muffler" actually a cat or is it a resonator of some sort?

Thanks

If talking about the MCS, there is a resonator in the middle of the exhaust between the cat and the Y pipe that splits off to the two rear mufflers (some aftermarket exhausts only have one rear muffler).

Yes, talking about a MCS, dual mufflers. Is it any big deal if you do not run the resonator?
