Clean up-porting the intake!

Has anyone taken the time to clean up-ported the intake...TB to Manifold? I'm in process of replacing my SC and was really surprised how gnarly things looked!!!! So I've read it's not a big deal with a SC.....but it just looked wrong. First tube after the TB had bad plastic flashing where they heat welded the ends to the tube - SC looked ok - both tubes to and fro from the IC had bad flashing as well, nerdals that could break off??? Finally these ends going into the IC have like 0.200 blunt ends. Can't seem to find a thread on this? Your thoughts?

Somebody has ported it all before. I remember a thread about it once. I don't think you gain that much throttle response.

That would be me for one; yes, remove the plastic weld flashing at the entrance of the supercharger intake duct, but don’t bother with the exit on the plastic composite piece. The entrance of the supercharger output duct can be cleaned up with a rat-tail file, and if there are casting blobs out of reach, use rough grit band sander belts, cut in half, secure the duct, pass the belt through, grasp each end and sand away. The exit of the supercharger output duct is ok as is because the ID is as large as the intercooler end tank opening. The shoulders on the entrance to the intercooler output duct can be filed off to aid in smoothing that flow path transition, it is not necessary to knife edge this opening, although a steep angle is better than a radius edge. The IC duct exit and intake manifold can be port matched by enlarging the IM opening about a millimeter larger than the output duct’s exit; the metal gasket will need to be matched as well. It is a good idea to remove the IM before performing any filing or grinding on it.

Intake porting is not as important on forced induction engines as it is on normally aspirated, but it sure can't hurt. As such, I ported my entire intake system during a head upgrade a few months ago. As it was done in conjunction with other mods I could not comment on the performance value of intake porting alone. Again, it can't hurt.

Bad Flow

I just found out cylinder 2 was flowing 10-15% more than any other cylinders. Caused a couple burnt valves before we found it since I was only measuring A/F from the tail pipe. I might have the manifold flow benched checked before putting too much work into it.

This is an awesome job. Ive seen some ported intakes before done by "the pro's" that did not look as good as this. this should do very well.

Oh, you did the work yourself? If so, what kind of speed drill and bits did you use?

Lots of automatic transmision fluid makes it go easyer, and also helps in polishing.

I have gone through all of this on my Suzuki's engine (a couple times)

I just used a old quart of CAM-2 that was siting around my shop since I was born. Used a Dremmel and anywhere from 220 - 1500 grit wet/dry paper.

I am going to do the "BullHorns", and I heard of a good trick with the S/C inlet pipe that will be done at the same time. I am also going to be taking all the measurements and figuring out the routing for a custom front mount intercooler setup.

I've used a Dremmel tool before to do port work, but I burned it up.

Darksyde, I hear you. I've used a real high-speed electric-die grinder before, but it belonged to a friend. I had used the Dremel after-the-fact. I won't make that mistake again.

I asked if you did the work yourself because the chambers look so well-polished. In addition, you really went down a long way into each one.

I know its not a MINI but, I did this with a Dremel and a lot of time.

The intake ports.

The finished engine, 1.3 litre Suzuki AKA "The Little Tractor Motor"
