The more closely I look at this the more interesting it becomes. Who's car is this? Someone's gotta know. It's be hard to hide this in MINI circles.

Very cool & interesting work-arounds to encorporate. ...Would love to see more & get a full tech explanation.

There's an interesting little silver bit hiding behind the bumper with a fat red samco hose attached to it. I could assume, but would rather know exactly what that is.

Thanks for sharing the photos!

I'm looking at the black plastic molded bit under the hood (has a yellow decal on it). ...Its right next to that fancy alloy overflow reservoir. I believe this vent or scoop is plumbed in-line with that large silver intake pipe (which appears to be) plumbed directly to the intake snorkel in the front grill - 2 sources of fresh air for the S/C.

Was this guy local to Atlanta or was he from elsewhere - do tell.

I am gonna go out on a limb and say that this is a MCS engine with the supercharger removed and a turbo system installed. The air inlet is probably in the passenger side cowling, there is a blowoff valve visible in front of it in back of the engine, a water-to-air intercooler on the driver's side, a water cooler in front of the a/c condensor and probably a reworked MCS intake manifold up front. 320hp? Maybe. I'd want to see it happening though. A turbo system is far easier 'tuned' and modded for scads of HP over a supercharger, but you will have the dreaded turbo lag no matter what.

I am interested in the coolant overflow tank and the PS reservoir for my car. My tank hasn't leaked yet, but the PS reservoir on mine is constantly oily.

And everyone knows that DS is the fastest color!

What a clean install.

This is a turbo that has replaced the supercharger on an S. The can type thingy on the driver side is a water-air intercooler - if you squint you can see the radiator for it on the front. The blow off valve is clearly visible.

The black intake on the passenger side is a NACA duct probably for inlet to the intake/turbo based on its location.

This could be done with good fabrication skills without a problem. that 320hp is coming from the NO2, although you could pretty easily get that kind of power out of a monster turbo - the issue is what happens to your torque curve, and how long you have to wait for that peak horsepower.

It sure is purdy!

Randy

It's a MCS, but the supercharger was removed and a turbo put in it's place. A MCS engine has more of the goodies required to live under high horsepower boosted situations (forged rods and crank, oil cooling nozzles, engine oil cooler, low compression pistons, etc), plus the Getrag trans in the MCS is better suited to high horsepower levels compared to the 5 speed. The car has the S badging, the spoiler, gas cap, etc as well. The hood scoop however isn't really needed in it's new configuration! It can be 'smoothed' with a MC hood.

Most definitely! Very clean and open. You'd have to change the water pump and drive belts over to a MC configuration because you lose the water pump on a MCS when you toss the blower. That would be a parts-bin reconfigure job though.

My curiosity is really on the ECU. What sort of reprogramming is there to have it not balk at the increased boost pressure, etc. The regulator and fuel rail looks stock, the manifold pressure sensor is there and stock most likely, and so on.

Betcha there is no stumble...

You'd be sruprised at how accomodating the ECU is on the MINI. If it isn't crazy, I bet he didn't even change the programming. The injectors look stock. The stock ECU is definitely still in place.

We have run cars with NO2 with no changes on the ECU, and it handles that fine as well. It just sees it as a REALLY cold day (density wise) .

The only question is, what happened to the throttle body, and is he still using the drive by wire system?

Randy

Oooh, I hadn't thought of that! THe TB definitely looks different, but I cant see any old-skool throttle cables going to it, and up front looks like it could be the throttle positioner, though the whole thing looks reversed and larger than the stock unit as I recall it looking.

I am liking this car more and more.

I can see the stock throttle body after further squinting - in its stock location. See the shiny metal band and the black plastic cover (it's there if you know what one looks like out of the car)? I just am trying to figure out the intake path with the inlet right into the intake from the TB.

Thanks for the pictures!
Really nifty and super clean like it was just installed.
Did a search for PWR intercoolers
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/cheapturbo/pwrraandin.html

Where is the air intake? Burried?
Not much room left for anything.
Why get rid of the drive by wire system? Not up to the task of turbo?

I was there also, and I asked him a lot of questions about this car. Of course, my most obvious question was why?? He mentioned that he had the supercharger on and used a 23% reduction pulley and said it didn't hurt it at all, only fried the water pump every 6 months. (?Sounds kinda fishy?)

He told me he was pushing 18 psi with that turbo set up
I have lots of pictures of this very car cause I knew ScottG and Randy would definately want to see every aspect of this. Give me an hour and I'll have them up.

I would like to see the turbo and plumbing behind the engine. There is a fair amount of space back there, but nothing super roomy by any means, lose the two close mounted cats and do a single further down (or none at all )and you have room for a small turbo. You would not need much, air inlet right to the turbo, then that long intake tract from the compressor outlet through the water intercooler (I like it!) and into the TB and manifold.

What kills me is that it's all more or less factory MCS on the front of the engine, it's just that so much is MISSING that it looks entirely new. All the bulk is hidden behind the engine now (think SRT-4 or PT Turbo (I can hear the groans now, lol)).

The MCS hood scoop will come in handy to push all that heat out of the engine compartment!

The cool thing about that setup is that you could actually attach the watercooler outlet to the standard MCS 'charger and intercooler setup and go two-stage! There is definitely room, but I doubt it would be as efficient as a turbo alone; I also doubt that little supercharger would appreciate pressurizing what is already pre-pressurized air. You'd have bragging rights out the wazoo though.

Info, I say! I want info!

If you mean the silver device above the exhaust area, that is a blow off valce for the turbo.
