I have had a turbo before, and I must say, the MCS engine is SUPERB! It's very linear and smooth for a 4 cylinder! The SC makes things quite intense and you can bet your **** that predictable but strong power helps a FWD car keep everything a little bit more in order.

Turbo lag is virtually a thing of the past with todays more effiecient turbos.

Lag is so minimul that its not a factor. With a stick shift, its irrelevant.

Are you sure? I've driven my borther's WRX and there is definately lag. It doesnt take the fun out of it but it is there. I agree with the above poster about the linearity of the power in the MCS. For this reason I prefer a well executed SC to a turbo, although a turbo is definately more tweakable.

I guess there are a few of us who'll differ in opinion with you on this issue.

While turbo's have improved there's still lag & its significant. Most turbo's I've driven require revs to be considerably higher (than compared to my MCS w pulley mod) to really FEEL the kick.

I do like cars that can rev and keep pulling strong in the mid/high RPM, but if I'm going to have a trade off between kick @ low/mid RPM vs. mid/high RPM I'll take low end.

While it could be better MINI's engine is pretty torquie & forgiving of low RPMs - can't say that about most turbos.

We had a 1993 Saab 900 Turbo and the turbo lag was very evident. We now have a 2001 93 and the turbo lag is almost, but not completely gone. The engineers have really done a great job on virtually eliminating turbo lag. However that said there is one thing that hasn't disappeared and is very evident in a front wheel drive turbo charged car and that is torque steer, if you aren't familiar with this condition it can be very dangerous in a quick start. I suspect a Mini with that much power and front wheel drive would have massive amounts of torque steer, any thoughts on that Randy?
Did the owner say anything about drive train and suspension modifications that were needed to handle the increased power.
He did an absolutely beautiful job its a real treat to see that level of work, my hat is off to him!

Put a big turbo on her... a big ole "variable vane" turbo. It'll be so fast it pulls the rear wheels off the ground on take off... without lag eh.

As for the question of "whose is it"... It says "Monster MINI" on the front lower windshield.

Sorry for being so slow, I had to drive back to Chicago after the show and of course the topic is well off to 3 pages!

I had to say this was a sight to behold and such a clean install. I took pics as well but they just duplicate what's here already.

He did mention having an on and off again problem with getting enough fuel. So much so that he put the beauty on a trailer to get it to the show, and then drove it in. My brother thought a second in-line fuel pump might help.

As was already stated, there will be bugs to fix but it works and it's so beatuiful.
(Also trying to get back on topic here )

Just another thought:

He did this all to an "S" and stripped everyting in the engine that made it an "S". You can do this to the Cooper but then you don't get the cool hood scoop and more importanly he would not get the Getrag 6-Speed transmission . I'd say he did things right starting with the "S".

He did have an H&R lowering kit installed. Coilovers, not just springs. I don't think it was 'required' but certainly a nice touch.

DANG IT I did not ask if he changed the drive train :???: I'd go with a LSD at least.

We're talking custom applications here.

Im sure that the factory can still create a laggy turbo setup but when you get to design your own header, exhaust and pick the perfect turbo for your application (thus spending a little more than the factory would on a high performance turbo rather than a mass produced turbo), turbo lag is virtually non existant.

I use 1.3 liter motors to drive turbos large enough to create 600 HP and have made over 500 HP to do so (Garrett GT-35/40's's and GT-40's) and the lag is very tolerable. When we use a smaller dual ball bearing GT-25, the lag is barely perceptable.

>>Who's car is this? Someone's gotta know. It's be hard to hide this in MINI circles.

I recognize what you are about to read is second hand, but my source, I believe, is very reliable...
I work with a guy who knows the owner of this car. The owner lives in Savannah, GA. From what my co-worker has said, the only things big about this car are the dollars spent on it and the owners mouth. This guy used to hang out with a group of sport compact drag racers, my co-worker included. He has essentially been blacklisted from the group because they are so tired of hearing his talk and seeing no results. He's NOT running 8.2s in the 1/8th. He can't break 10. He is NOT getting 300+hp out of the car. He is MAYBE getting 200hp at the wheels. The number my co-worker said was 180whp. The project, although it looks nice, was a disaster when it came to big HP numbers.

My co-worker also said that he had been working with the guys at Dxxxxxx Racing, an MCO sponsor. The guys at D racing reportedly setup a car the same way that this guy from Savannah did and didn't get close to the HP numbers that he said he was getting. They guys a D Racing have tried to contact him to discuss his numbers but he won't return their calls.

I was on the Super Street/EuroTuner Tour to NOPI in my MCS, and one of our stops was BMP Design in Texas (you know them as promini.com, home of Blue Thunder, and as Super Sprint Exhaust). Al just bought another MCS, removed the SC and is working on plumbing a turbo to it. Knowing the quality of his work, it'll be first rate and fast.

All we need is a little patience........

I'm still waiting for Punisher to take the leap and do a similiar setup to his MCS. I'm not trying to taunt or harass here. Given your experience with these setups would you consider doing this to your car?

Does anyone know how effecient this charge cooler is? [refering to the buldge in the plumbing right of valve cover] I like how clean the whole design is. No big nasty radiators stickin out where they shouldn't, etc.

I ditto the aux. inline fuel pump if he's having fuel troubles. It was mentioned earlier that the install included some 'management' controller. Is this true, yes/no---could it be in conflict with the stock ecu (if its still even there)? Any mention on what turbo he went with exactly?

Forest, It was great having you guys drive by on the Tour, I wish we could have just had more MINIs in the crowd. Maybe next year?? I couldn't believe the guy that drove all the way from northern California. He ended up being the winner of the free supersprint Muffler for driving the furthest. Don't forget the great "MINI / Bimmer roundup" on October 11. You should try to make the trip. We are giving away some serious Prizes. We are not talking
just "T" shirts and donuts. We are talking prizes like, bilstein shocks, car covers, Kumho tires, Schroth quick fit seat belts, Skip Barber racing school experience and more!!! BTW how did your tire hold up on the rest of the tour? The turbo car will be on display for the event!!!

Thanks for hosting us, and for the food.

The tire was fine - it was the rubber gasket in the cap pushing down on the stem. No valve stem cap = no slow leak!

But, I blew out one of the Spax front coilover struts - those darn Mississippi rough roads. Looks like I'm going with a trick Penske coilover set-up instead.

Thanks for all the hipe on my car. To answer some of the questions about my mini-cooper S. We took off the supercharger and did a three angle vavle job on the head, installed a custom ground cam, the car has all forged internal components, after accomplishing natural asperation with the vehicle, we installed and designed a T3 super 60 hybrid turbo with a PWR liquid to air intercooler system. The car has a Borla type R exhaust, H&R springs, 5 Ziegan 18" wheels, power stop brake swap. It also has 440 injectors with a Greedy piggyback system. For cold air intake we intigrated a plastic intake in the top section of the header panel piped directly into the turbo. If anyone has any questions i would be happy to answer them. Please post to the minsters and i will get back to you.

Minsters,

Awesome lookin ride, does it run as good as it looks?? If you've had it on the dyno, what are your results? Don't need to know if you went broke building this lil gem, but how much time (labor) has it taken to get to this point? Hope you don't mind but I've got to recommend those rims to my ds owning buddy, sweet.

Dear Life Is Good

Tell you and your friend Matt to shove your slow *** rice wanna wish you was me, up your ***!! As for you, you should stop talking all this **** when your rolling on a stock MCS with some bolt-ons. The last creative idea you had was asking Matt what was going on with my car. I have built and completed the first of its finest turbo MCS.

For all interested parties I will be traveling to Florida this weekend and will be posting my dyno chart this weekend. To finally SHUT- UP all you haters.

Sincerely,
Boosted

Hey MINSTER. Welcome to the site. Beautiful work on the turbo. That's awesome. Unfortunately, a couple users in this thread didn't give you the appropriate respect in their posts. But please be a little more discreet with your posts. I, for one, would like to see you stick around for awhile to give us some info on your MINI. Just giving you a friendly caution that this community in general won't go for vulgarity and insult-slinging. Let your car do the screaming.
