Transmission price?

Might need a new or rebuilt tranny. Lots of threads on how to install one but not much info on price. The dealer tells me a new one is $3500 and they
don't sell rebuilt. Anyone know where I can buy a rebuilt Gertrag six for an 04 MCS? What is typical price for an install if I have someone do it for me?
I am getting prices north of $5000 parts/labor and am in a bit of a panic.
Looks like it might be a DIYer.

Thanks

Your dealer is quite reasonable on the price. Might also want to look for an 05-06 since the gearing was changed. The unit still fits.

Check local recyclers as well, won't be a rebuilt but might be able to find a gently used one. Watch to make sure all the mounts are there. There is a tendency to break one of the mounting tabs in an incident.

Here's what I know about trannys in MINI's. You can find them in junk yards out of rear end wrecks or order them from the dealer. Even if you order them from a non-dealer, that vendor is getting them from a dealer. The parts cost what the parts cost. You might be able to save a few dollars getting the clutch and stuff aftermarket but the tranny is going to cost you.

Can you replace your Tranny? I bet you can with the help of MINI Friends. Ask around and find someone that's done any FWD tranny work. Based on reviews I have read and work I've done with local owners on MINI's it can be done. Please do a ton of research and try to plan for everything you can. It will take you most if not all of a weekend.

How is the gearing different? Do you like it better?

Thanks again for the responses.

Try a Ford dealer. Its the same one used in the SVT focus, so you might get a break there.

This was talked about before in a different thread but no firm answer. No one had actually made the swap.
Can you say for sure the Ford part works in the MINI? If it does that would be great.

Prices are all over the map as are conditions... I got a brank spankin' new one for $1100 that rode around the country on a race trailer for 3 years, but I got lucky (thanks again to Tony Nuzzo). They're sometimes on eBay, too. And, there's always car-part.com to search salvage yards...

Here’s a tip for those having problems and seeking help resolving them, edit your profile to include your location so it will appear in the upper right of your post, or at least include the location in your request or comments.

Thanks but in this particular instance I did not want to do that.

Another thought. My original tranny does not have LSD.
If the 05-06 will fit in the 04, might I also look for one with factory LSD and get that along with the replacement tranny?

05-06 Has lower geared 1st and 2nd for quicker acceleration.

You can also add a quaife or cusco lsd during install, but thats gonna add about a grand or so to the parts price. It's hard to find a factory LSD, not that many were shipped and I'd hazard to guess that most recyclers will not know they have one.

Now when I priced out one a few months back the cost of the new OEM from the dealer with and without LSD was either exactly the same or so close it made it no brainer to get the LSD one.

Any performance difference between the factory LSD and the Quaife? I know they are different style units and work differenty but do they both
work equally well in an autox?

Thanks again

Ummm.....I bought my 6-speed for 1100 used with 2500 miles on it. So you CAN find a deal. You just have to search and get lucky. Its a doable process. With not knowing your way around the car...I would say a weekend to swap it out. This is what mine looks like cause Im in the middle of a 5->6 speed swap. Yours wont look as terrible as this... If you look at the right hand side of the pic you can see my destroyed Midlands tranny...

I don't know who's rebuilding them and what wear parts they are replacing but the pricing is attractive.

I am pretty sure the Getrag part # is 6mtt280/6mtt320 depending on year.
its like buying a creamcicle from the grocery store, or the ice cream man. I would imagine if ford racing (or motorcraft or whatever its called) has an lsd thats probably similir if not the same as the quaife issued from the factory.
Its worth investigating, as it opens more possibilities of places to find one.

With the extra money you saved get a lightweight flywheel and stage 2,3,4
clutch, and still have a couple of bucks left over,
Just a thought...
Best of luck

Jeremy

My local dealer is quoting me
$3850 for brand new LSD 6 Speed and
$3000 for a brand new non LSD.
Book time for install is 10.4 hours
with an hourly rate about $100 thats only $1040

I dont understand people getting $8000 quotes for gear box installs
even if you add in a clutch package you wouldnt be over $6000

and to make things even crazier Mini Mania is selling new factory gearboxes for more than the dealer. Mini Mania... Shame on you
