oil catch can.

I tried searching, but couldn't find much info.

I remember someone a few months ago saying that their FMIC had tons of oil falling into it.

anyone running a catch can? i might be able to pick up a used one and I'm not sure if it's a huge deal on the MKII minis.... M7 doesn't market the catch can for the MKII, only the MKI...

I guess I just want to see if anyone is running one, and if so, is it actually working? what tubes did you use to install it?

I would also like to know this. I ALWAYS find oil in the little crannys of my engine bay and would like to change that, as I start buying performance parts.

I changed out my FMIC to a ALTA FMIC at about 22,500 miles and there was not one drop of oil in the old FMIC. I checked it closely because I was also concerned about this.

Its a problem on R56 to do correctly. The hoses are two different sizes and no clearance to do it right on the engine side.

If you install a catch can on a R56, you will see oil being collected. Not much, drops here and there once in a while but enough to gum up your intercooler if not running one. Been talking to the folks at M7, and they are working on one. The key is the bloody hose on the engine and trying to get a spring clamp installed since the plastic U bracket is not worth a darn, allows for air and oil leaks and can effect idle at times with stumbles (been there, done it and have the scares to prove it).

After many orders and several boxes full of worthless catch cans, no one out there is doing correctly yet for R56 and you end up hacking your existing tubes for nothing. Save your money and wait a bit longer, M7 should have something soon that is well worth it.

Hope that helps.

Morbius, the official m7 spokesman! Good to know, I too find oil in and around my injectors from time to time. Could these be related? Why and how does that even occur? Should I start a new thread...?

Thanks!

No, never ! I happen to be talking the M7 team this morning about this issue, the timing was the best

Yup, I have see the some thing on mine and tracked it down to crankcase return vent. That stupid hose leaks all over the place because it does not seal. Its a loose fit and its assumed vacuum will over all forces and it does not since its not sufficient.

If you remove the hose from the engine, trim the rubber ridges off the outside and with a dremel tool trim a small notch in the top of the crank case vent cover and slide on a spring clamp and that will seal everything up very nicely.

Hope that helps.

Catch cans initially came out to be hooked up between the breather and the intake. I started a while back hooking it up different. On my 1000 mile srt4 i noticed oil in the intercooler and it comes from the PCV valve!

The pcv valve opens when there is vacuum in the intake manifold. This sucks the vapors out of the engine, however it also takes oil from it too. The oil tends to make its way to the intercooler on my srt because the throttle body sat right above the intercooler. I dont think you will see much oil in teh FMIC via the pcv valve but i bet you get more oil into your intake manifold via the pcv vs the breather which usually routes to the intake.

^yea, on my old accord i had one set up on the pcv and i'd catch about 3 oz of oil per oil change. not a lot to freak about though.

My main concern is oil getting into the intercooler and clogging it up, reducing the effectiveness of it. within the year I am hoping to get some track time, and want to either replace my intercooler prior to then, or make some sort of diy water spray to prevent heatsoak, but anything else I can do will help.

I want to install T fitting with a hose into a canister in the hose that goes out from the valve cover and goes into the beginning of the intake.

You cant put a t fitting, you hve to put it inline because the vapors come out very quick through the hose so its not like gravity will cause it to fall in a can.

Here is a first. I made my intake with a built in catch can in it. I put chambers in it so the oil does not go into the in take. There is a drain on teh bottom.

How often do you need to empty out your oil catch can?
