If I had to do it all over again, I'd spend $40 on a K&N HAI and save the $210, get the pulley sooner and have the left over $90 for a one ball, which can usually be had for ~100 so 260 out of pocket and the basic airflow mods are completed.

 

i love that sounds of the valve opening. i will sit there in traffic or where ever i am and just rev to hear the sucking. makes my day. matter of fact i'm going to go listen to it now.

I was driving back from Colorado.

Don't get me wrong...I love this intake. In fact, I find myself WOT up freeway on-ramps, from stop lights, almost anywhere becuase I love the sound.

I was in CO visiting family, and there were a couple of times that they commented on the sound (usually, what's that whistling?) and it was when driving with very slight throttle. Just enough to barely open the valve, but enough to get air whistling through it.

 

Dang, i didn't see very many mini's when i was down there and everyone was staring at me all weird haha. Are Mini's "rare" down there?

but the whine is awesome, agreed.

 

Ok. The DDM works CAI is at my house. I am going to attempt to install it tonight when I get home from work. Mind you I have NEVER turned a wrench on an automobile. Is there a DIY on CAI's on NAM? I have been looking. What tools will I need? Should I wait to get help from someone who knows what they are doing or is this something I can do propoerly if I just follow directions? I guess my fear is that I will take the intake off/apart and I cant put it back together I will be stuck with an inoprable car. Thanks guys.

They're not THAT rare, but they on ly come out at certain times of the day.

For example, downtown where I work, there are at least 4 that I see in the parking garage, and I usually see 2 or 3 a day when I'm driving. But yeah, it's not like up in PDX where you see so many more of them on the roads.

I'm really not new to modding, I just come from the V8 world.
..and the majority of work I've done has been on pre-1970 cars.

But the CAI is pretty simple... don't be afraid to take 2 hours to do it, if needs be. A majority of mistakes come from trying to rush. Even removing the ECU harness is easy, you just gotta make sure you pull the tab locks all the way out, helps if you have small fingers.

Best part, is the pride you'll feel of doing your own work when its all said and done!

 

EXACTLY! thats why I am attempting this. Im excited. I know I need a certain kind of wrench.....teh problem is I dont know which kind. I couldnt hear the guy on the phone. Im on the way to advanced auto parts...ill check back from my phone....I certain wrench that all minis need to remove some parts of the filter. I cookie to whoever can post it the quickest

EXACTLY. I am going to buy them now. it says ill need 10mm socket wrench and 13mm socket wrench and long 8'' socket extension. It also says ill need 10mm and 13mm wrenches as well? I dont get it. Dont laugh

 

Probably saying you'll need socket wrenches and open-end/box-end wrenches. If I remember right, I did it all with box-ends. Sometimes its most easy to tighten/loosen bolt-and-nut combos with a socket wrench on one end and a box end on the other.

Everyone should own a decent mechanics tool set... will save you a lot of money/time/hassle.

edit: I never needed an 8" socket extension when dealing with the air box. Though, you'll need one if you ever wanna change the spark plugs...

 

Well I did it. Its installed. I wont say how long it took due to making myself look too bad. I LOVE the whine and dont think ill get tired of it but who knows. Thanks to ALL of you that helped me and were patient while this noob figured stuff out! ha. And a special thanks to TRuTH for taking all 30 of my calls and patiently answering all my questions...couldnt have done it without you. THANKS!

Ok. I am STILL real paranoid I did it wrong and that the clamps are going to slip off and the hose is going to come off and I am going to blow my engine but for now I will check them after each time I drive. I just want to find someone local to tell me if I did it right AND if the sound its making is normal. I couldnt get all six screws into the top of the CAI.

Im still baffled at how cool/helpful strangers are to eachother on here. What a bonus us mini owners get. Truly.

Even if the clamps come off, you won't blow your engine. I would say checking it every time you drive is a little paranoid. Check it after the first time you drive, then in a week, then at your next fillup and then maybe a month? Just eyeball it next time you need washer fluid or something.

Here's the thing - you can never have too many tools and you will never be upset about having the right tool for the job. With the tons o money you will save in labor, be sure to invest in reasonable quality tools and lots of them. Quality screwdrivers are key, as are quality ratchets.
