Stupid question, but I had to ask Panel filters

Hi what is the difference between the panel filter and the normal intake filter? I'm a bit confused. Where would the panel filter be situated on the car?

I'm a real noob

Panel filter is what comes standard, it is a flat filter compared to the larger round or cone shaped filters (more surface area) of the higher performance intakes. Open the hood and look to the right of the motor back towards the windshield, you will see a black box with a round hose going to it. That's it. Better to be a Noob that to not ask and be a Boob....

It sounds like what you are asking is what the difference between the aftermarket panel filters and the stock one. The difference is the aftermarket ones are made of cotton with metal mesh all over the filter. It is sprayed with oil to attract dirt. The standard one is just paper. The cotton ones are less restrictive than the paper. The aftermarket ones will do what a cold air intake does, just to a lesser degree. It will make your car a bit louder.

ahhh! minimarks understood exactly what i was asking. I never knew the standard Cooper S/Cooper has the "panel" filter. Have the JCW and it's the only filter I've ever opened up to look at - so I thought all filters are round

Since you have the JCW, even though it is round it is still paper. You can upgrade to a cotton mesh filter for a little better flow. Madness sells one, and if you search I believe there are a couple of lower cost DIY options as well. I just bought the Madness washable filter for $100, the OEM replacement paper element is in the $150 range I think.
