Supersport motorcycles vent it without recirculation. Kind of ironic when you think about how bad an oily patch on a road is when your riding...

Andy,
You don't want it to be much higher than your engine . This could cause the oil to buid up in the lines, and run back into where you want to keep it out of. You ideally want to keep it the lowest point in the recirculation system.

That's a good point, I didn't even think of that, but it makes sense.

I'm ordering the Summit unit. I'll let you know how it goes...
I'm going to first try venting to the atmosphere, rather than recirculate. We'll see what happens.

Bisch, that would be much appreciated. I'm very curious as to where you will decide to mount it. Thanks for your willingness to share!

Silver, I think I saw "The Dogs Bullocks" Helix decal available on their site ( it caught my eye, cause I'd seen it on andy's posts  )

Another option to consider is the CNC'd aluminum catch can that M7 is comming out with. I saw the prototype and they think is should be out within the next two months. It was a little smaller than the Alta unit had an external oil return line with all brackets and hoses. The hoses may actually turn out to be braded steel hose and when combined with the highly polished can, look very well put together. Definatly an addition to the engine compartment. There was even a small drain plug in the bottom with a magnent installed. Talk about attention to detail  I'll keep you posted as best i can on this,RandyPage Title maxmini home site

Ideally your catchcan should be baffled so the junk its supposed to be "catching" doesnt go in one side and out the other....

Would this keep the Alta can from working effectively as it is designed currently? I am thinking about getting the Alta catch can, but am needing more input from ones that have it already. I want to lengthen the life of the SC & Intake system, but I want to make sure this does that and not just throw money away.

Any input would be helpful.

>>I have the alta on my car. HEre is some info. For certain cars, IT DOES NOT FIT. I know this as my car was one of the cars that it does not fit on. But... Here is what does work... and Alta, If you want, you can call me about this. I made a small bracket, and put an extra bolt in, and it fit with not much hassle. The piece can be made for about 2 dollars.

>>The catch can does in fact catch, More that I though. For people looking to get others, Be careful as the place it goes is very space limited. and a larger one may infact not fit.

I honestly have no idea if the alta can is baffled or not. It doesnt look to be but you can baffle it by filling it up with chain.

Uggggg...please Dan, get this post. Could you please show us the instructions for the alta can? I'm still havn a hard time decifering which hose goes where. I'm trying to reverse engineer my own and even after talking to Randy on the phone a few months ago, I can't figure it out.

Thanks...

Oh ya...Randy, if you're gettn this too, can you post the instructions?

Silver,
From looking at the picture on outmotoring's website, it looks like Alta puts the filter inline in the hose connecting the valve cover to the supercharger. There is also one from the valve cover to the intake tube. The clear hose looks like it connects the top to the bottom of the can... its just a "sight glass" to see how much treasure you've collected

So is it worth it to get the Alta oil catch can?

Will it make enough difference in lengthening the longevity of the SC/ intake track to justify the cost?

FYI-other performace mods that I already have are alta air diverter, borla street exhaust, somewhat lighter rims (panasports) and planned non-run flats once the current ones are done.

Thanks in advance for your input. I am really just learning from here and Randy's new board (read I do not have a degree in this tuff like some of you do).

UPDATE:

:???: :???: :???: :???: :???:

I just got the breater tank from Summit Racing...
It is nothing close to what they describe or picture!!! The only thing that is even similar is the tank's general shape! Very dissapointed! The fittings are totally different. Only one elbow hose fitting on top, one on the bottom. There is no filter what-so-ever. The tank is a totally different configuration for hose inlet/outlet.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!! This one is going right back in the box...

I have this one from Comet Karts. Its pretty small and the quality is soso, but hey, it was 16 dollars.... it came with the filter, fittings, bolts and sticker as pictured

LINK to Comet Kart Sales

They even have a spiffy chrome one if 36 dollar catchcans is your thing.

i'm the one that has the catchcan andy posted links to. it looks identical to the picture only i bought the black one. if you got something different, i'd call summit up and get it straightened out -- they sell probably 12 different models of catchcans.

i run it on my autox rabbit with great success. the connection on it is an AN fitting, and i have a hose on the bottom of mine so that i can drain it into used oil 1qt containers between heats.

They have re-designed (read: cheapened) the unit.

Anyway, the tank will not fit anywhere in the engine bay, or surrounding areas. It is a very big tank (size of a football).
I have decided to fabricate a "MINI-sized" oil catch can. I can fabricate one of better quality very easily. I'll even baffle it...I'll post when complete.

Guys, come on... ever remove your intercooler and get oil... even a drop?? Not me. Seems like a waste to me and lets add some weight in a bad place.

Wonder why Alta is the only Mini parts place to make this. Maybe cause you dont need it!! They make it cause they are in the Subaru mindset. This is also why no one really has one.

I have had my intercooler off on two occaisions. One to connect the BMP design boost pressure gage and the second time to install the M7/venom NOS system. On both occaisions oil residue was clearly visable. I called BMP during the first install and they told me that this is NORMAL for a motor of this type to have some oil in the air stream and that it was of no real concern but of course not optimal. Upon the second occaision we noticed that the oil had built up enough to cause some minor clogging of the air passages and we washed it out with acetone. I have 21k miles on the car BTW. Bottom line is if you run your motor hard there WILL be OIL in the intercooler. It is normal but you can certainly help by removing it with some type of catch can. If BMP says its there , and M7 knows its there and I have seen it there then perhaps you arent looking in the rite place. The intercooler is that big rectangular box on top of the motor FYI  Randy

Uhhh, YES. The two times I have removed it, oil was present. Maybe you don't drive it like it was intended to be driven j/k
Have you ever seen what a catch can can collect?
