I'm not debating that - not at all... I'm just saying that doesn't mean 100% of them are worse. Hey, I'm buying a dam tune and cam from you... don't call me out until you have my money.

I've seen a few of these dyno sheets... not sure what your definition of many is... more than two?

We're mostly in harmonious agreement. Can't wait till you tune the snot outta my car next week and make me talk bad about MTH afterward.

A few weeks ago I passed the CA emissions testing which includes "driving" the car on a roller for testing. I confess that I am an RMW cult member as I have RMW pistons, RMW cam, RMW head, RMW header, and a pulley on my '02 MCS. End result, the car passed the test without any problems. Put your worries aside, buy the RMW header, then go have some fun!

Interesting.

It seems to me (although Jan might not agree), that a canned tune is good* up to pulley/intake/exhaust. I know I've talked to Blimey about his MTH before and he seemed pleased by the results, not to put words in his mouth. Once cam/header, etc goes in then its custom tune all the way.

Is this the truth or heresy?

If someone doesn't know any better, sure they're happy with a canned tune. But I've yet to hear of anyone going back to canned after having a custom tune. It's like comparing chuck steak to fillet mignon.

My theory is that, if you can do a standard tune for a stock car or a JCW car, you can do a standard tune for a 15%+intake+exhaust car that's "pretty good"...

That said, on NONE of the cars will the results be as good as a custom dyno tune.

You should be able to do a "standard" tune for just about any known mod state of the engine... but as you mod more stuff, the "uniqueness" of your car vs. other's with the same mods is likely to grow... due to tolerances and interactions between the various parts... and a standard tune would have to be conservative to be safe in accounting for this (i.e. run rich)... so the likely gains of a dyno tune vs. "canned" tune would likely increase, the more stuff you had bolted on.

I would expect this to be true even for mod/tune packages like some vendors "stages", etc.

Short version - no substitute for a dyno tune by a great tuner... no matter what you have.

But, yes, I've been happy with my MTH, given that was the only real option I had at the time.

I am starting to think that I will go with my 15% and have it tuned. (hopefully Jan will be by Helix next spring...hint hint). I will probably skip out on the injectors for now. In a year or two if I can justify more power I will get 380's and cam, and have the car retuned. I figure that will bring me the best results for the time being and I have a feeling that a 15% and tune will be enough for me, for now.

Its just really hard to not hanker for more power when I've just been running intake/exhaust, which does just about nothing. I'll probably spend some money on an IC diverter to improve the stocker's efficiency and I really want the M7 extreme scoop as well.

Your pending 15% reduction pulley swap alone and untuned will bring a smile to your face!

^^^Oh you don't even know. I am smiling just thinking about it!

I am calling Helix on Monday and setting up a date to get my 15% and plugs installed at the end of July if possible!

Then if Jan would come back to Helix before the summer's out there's no question I'll be there getting my MINI tuned by him. (This is not subtle, I know).

Jan is working on a network of shops that can do remote tunes, that way he doesn't have to travel all over the world. I'd be surprised if Helix is not on his short list.

So how does that work? I get my car dyno'd then send him the maps, and the ECU??? Any info on this would be great! I have no idea what goes on with this stuff.

If/when he gets it to work, he basically tunes your car by remote control.... in real time... like webex for dyno tuning... car on the dyno at your local (properly setup and trained and certified by Jan) shop... Jan on the computer at his location, tuning your car just like he were there in person...

If he can get all of it to work to his satisfaction...

Is that what you're doing for you when he tunes your car soon?

Sounds like the remote tuning might be the way to go since he can't be everywhere at once. I'll try to get more info when I call Helix, and I should probably call Jan too.
