>>The MINI world is very strange...

Agreed!

>>By the way, the only dyno testing comparing different tuners on same dyno, same day showed JCW beating most of the others handily in terms of HP.

Gimme a link!!!

Go to MINI2.com and head for the Performance and Tuning Forum - there's a long thread about dyno day testing comparing multiple tuners!

I did several searches on MINI2 and couldn't find the thread you're referring to. Can you remember any keywords so I can refine the search? Thanx.

And this page (specifically post #149) is the one with the useful info:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...e=10&pp=15

The two stock MCS dyno'd at 142.6 whp and 140.7 whp. The JCW dyno'd at 172.0 whp and the Hartge dyno'd at 172.1 whp.

172 hp at the wheels for $6000, no thanks.

we saw a lot of 170s and a couple 180s at the wheels
from the norcal pulley party.

better yet, Randy of Randy Webb Motorsport (formally known as
mini-motorsport) got it done for less than $1300.

Very cool, thanks guys!

It will be interesting to see what figures we get with our American fuel.

VmpyrDavid,

are these values at the wheel or flywheel?
did they say any thing about how they "modified" their superchargers?

No they didn't. And from looking at the engine pics, there's nothing really visible that has been changed, least I couldn't tell. All the cars were dyno'd a the same place (MiniSpeed). One thing that they did mention was that the MCS's HP probably would have been higher, but they didnt' have enough airflow over the intercoolers & whatnot. They had a giant fan infront of the scoop & radiator, but I imagine a true airflow would have been better. They had the car owners guess what their HP would turn out to be, the MC owners were real close, the JCW owners guessed over, and the other MCS owners guessed under.

I don`t get it, the Quicksilver MCS LOST 12lbs of torque!? Why spend $800 then? What`s up with that?

to my understanding,
the free flow exhaust, eliminates some of the back pressure, thus loosing HP or torque. This is what I've been told by friends that race weekends.
hope that helps

Yah... 914's have the same problem. a little back pressure can be a good thing.

Fascinating! Thanks for the info, V-David!

I wonder why the two JCW's were so different?

I'm beginning to think it'd be better to go with someone who does a lot of installs rather than the dealership where they may do three or four tops.

Exactly.

For the amount of money a JCW costs vs. HP gain... $5500 here.... You could definately build a faster Cooper S. Also, if you run in SCCA Solo II (Autocross) the kit will put you in ASP.... your competition would be Modded Corvettes, Ferrari's, & the like... Uh.. naaaah... Id rather go into DSP or SM2.....Well maybe not DSP.. In the SEDiv, there is a 4 time champ in DSP... ack.

Why then do vendors claim 10+ hp increase for some exhausts? Are there any legit dyno charts to support these figures? If not, then why are we purchasing exhausts? $800 for different tips and louder sound? If that is the case, I would like to see an exhaust that is lighter and more durable than stock with some nice Borla like tips, but make it just as restrictive as stock so not to loose torque. Oh, $400-$500 would be nice

Paul.

I imagine it really depends on the exhaust. One of the guys in my autocross class (G-Stock) has a Borla Cat-Back on his MCS, and at Divisionals he consistantly beat us (stock or other cat-back exhausts) off the line. I honestly believe it's the exhaust doing it for him.... well that & he's a good driver...I have an article on exhausts somewhere.. I'll see if I can find it. I do remember that it said the Magnaflow had the Best/Loudest sound, but the lowest HP gain. The Borla had the best HP gain.

From the mag... "All figures are quoted at the flywheel."
