anybody know what its does and why do we need it. the duct that connects to the fire wall keeps popping out and it raddles. i dont get any cels or anything like that . is there a way to just eliminate it. im thinking of putting a smaill filter on the end of it , kind of like a breather fliter. this thing really doesnt seem to do anything at all but raddle and i dont like raddles. any ideas or suggestions out here in nam land?
I can't see why you can't block it off and remove it. You just won't get that ever so slight BOV sound. The filter is not going to work though as this will leak boost, thus decreasing intake boost and power. Just blank it off with an appropriate sized plug. If you have an exposed filter such as Alta you will still have the BOV sound.
on the cool side boost tube there is a connection that runs behind the intake and connects to a round thing that is the sound generator. then it connects to a another square tube that runs in to the fire wall. its the part that connects to the firewall that pops out. its rectangular and there is a red strip on it.
That's interesting. I purchased my CAI kit at the Alta grand opening. It did not include a plug. So is this a rather recent addition to the kit? Do I even need it or want it.

YES BLOCK IT OFF AND REMOVE IT! The plug etc. and instructions on how, are even included with our intake system for the R56.
Hope that helps!
I noticed you mentioned this in another thread recently.. it seems the kit changed somewhere along the way.
To clarify on the purpose of the sound generator, does it make that supplemental whirring turbo like sound that increases in pitch and volume as you add more throttle and RPM?
And my real question is: Does removing it provide any noticeable gains in performance or efficiency?
i will try and get a before and after pic up for ya. alta called me yesterday and said i would have the plug here this week maybe even by friday. which will be great because i will be home on friday and i can put up a pic or two. you need the alta boost tubes to do this, the hole you plug is on the cold side tube that goes into the throttle body.

Sorry for bringing this old subject up, but since in the ALTA CAI instructions there is no mention about the sound generator and the blocking of it, can you please give me a clue about how to block this?
Thank you!

No issue at all! The newer kits are shipped with a Sound Generator(SG) block off plug. IT allows you to remove the SG if you choose to. Some clients have noted the like the sound of the intake / engine better without the SG installed, and others have done it for addl. clearance. Either way it is optional.
Ok, in order to remove it, I need also the ALTA hose, or just to put this plug?
Question:
Will this lead to more pressure going in the engine?
Can I find somewhere only this plug??
Will it create any problem?

what is the design purpose of the SG? how it's supposed to work?
The understanding is that it is supposed to create / mask some engine noise under boost. I don't believe anyone that has eliminated the part, noticed any appreciable change in sound.
my alta kit never came with the plug either, they shipped it 2 weeks later but last thing I want to do is take my CAI apart again. I am also having the same problem with the sound generator hose disconnecting from the firewall because of pressure. I'm just leaving it hanging. Does anybody here feel that will cause a problem with performance or reliability? Is it ok to leave hanging? It do notice I'm getting a rattle at takoff from it though. My other thought was to glue the hose attachment into the firewall so it doesnt come loose again.

There is no pressure within the hose. But what you may want to to is remove that snorkle from the hose. Or remove the SG itself. In some cases that can get too close to the intake box and cause that interference. Let me know if I can help in either case.
