Randy got me my Alta intake this week and it took about an hour to install. It went in in about 1.5 hours, but I had the same problem that PHOBOL reported a few weeks ago. -- namely that the pipe is a bit too short.

What I experienced was that the clamp made the filter "squeeze" off when the clamp was tightened, even after a thorough cleaning of everything with 91% Isopropyl alcohol. The oil on the filter certainly exacerbated the problem. I have suggested to Randy that Alta should lengthen the pipe by 1/4 or 3/8" and put a a flange on the pipe.

Well I finally got the filter wedged on, but I was concerned that the entire weight of the filter is carried at the flange end and that it would take only one hard bump to have the filter torque off.

Here is a simple, cheap band-aid I invented.

Step 1: Find a ~22" piece of stiff wire. I used some #12 solid electrical wire with black plastic insulation, but a coat hanger would have done as well. It is bent into a noose like this:



The round part was bent around a can with ~5-6" diameter and is slightly offset.

The noose fits over the back (nearest the firewall) end of the filter and the ends are bent around the box, fitting together like this:



The black wire is nearly invisible, but I added some green lines to show where it is.

With this fix, the filter is "guyed" and the load on the rubber flange is a lot less.


Performance wise -- the Alta give the SOP (Seat-of-the-pants) dyno boost everyone else has reported. The blower now sounds like I'm in the middle of a beehive when I mash the loud pedal.
