Intake identification

Hey guys and gals,
I just picked up this 06 yesterday and it came with this intake:

It looks to me like a generic K&N strapped on to the stock intake tubing. Im new to the Mini so Im not sure if this was a kit or a DIY job.

Anyway my real question:
Will the Alta silicone hose fit in the place of the stock tubing while using the existing filter? Would just that mod effect performance or would the filter need to be swapped to get any effect?
Thanks,
7

Yes you can change out the stock tubing with the silicone hose...I doubt you will notice much gain in performance.

That and the silicone tube will make your super charger whine a bit more pronounced. It's worth it's wait in gold to me for the increased noise.

I too love the sound of the ALTA. For me it was well worth the money. Sad thing is...I can't ever hear it anymore. The exhaust is too loud.

So is it the filter or exhaust that makes the louder whine noise?

Partly the filter, but mostly because the Alta has you completely remove the partition that sits behind the intake. This lets in some more air from the vent by the windshield and more sound into the cabin. The exhaust has nothing to do with it other than drowning out the sound.

The ALTA Inlet tube does work with that system, and the dyno shows a gain of around 4-5 WHP. So looks good, works well, makes power. Choice is yours.

Congrats on the new car!

Thanks, You rock! Any tips on how to open the plastic shield to the cowl to get colder air? Maybe just cut a really big hole....

You can just remove that whole cowl plastic piece between the bulkhead and the cone filter. It doesn't do much except keep some audio from reaching the cabin.
