I havent done it on my MINI but I have done it on my 94 Mazda B4000 pick-up. NAPA sells specific MAF sensor cleaner. On my truck the procedure is to disconnect the battery, clean the sensor, reassemble the sensor, hook up the battery and off you go. On my truck the battery must be disconnected about 20 minutes so that the computer can "forget" what it has learned and reset itself, reprogramming itself to how the sensor reads now that it is clean again.

th3118- so there was no difference after cleaning the maf. i was wondering if a dirty maf could have caused a cel to come on. what was the reason for cleaning yours did you have any oil on it? i have the homemade cai with a big foam filter. i was thinking that the boost from the alta pnp might have sucked in some oil on the maf and cause the cel i was getting. any thoughts on this?

Big difference on my truck but there was a lot of carbon built up on it, no oil.

I run a Alta drop in flat filter when I auto-x in stock class. It was soaked in oil when it arrived, used paper towels to mat most of it off, but was still worried about the MAF. It had a very light oil film on it, so I cleaned it.

Maybe unnecessary, but it was easy to do.

Never hurts.

But yes always remove the excess oil if possible during filter installation!
