Open ECU reflashing?

Just curious if there is software available to allow tuning of the R53 ecu? Similar to subaru and mitsubishi ( http://www.openecu.org/index.php?title=EcuFlash )

Hot damn I would do bad things for Open ECU.

My buddy has this along with EvoScan for his Evo IX and it's a beautiful thing. The interface and flexibility is far better than Dimsport, IMO.

*dreams a little dream of Open ECU*

Yeah, I don't actually do the tuning myself, but I'm very familiar with it. Our shop evo was able to make 499.7 whp on pump gas on the stock ECU! (waay not stock motor/turbo).

Very cool stuff; glad to see another Evo-head snooping around, LOL. Congrats on the big power! Another local Evo buddy of mine has a GT35R in his VIII MR and put down about 450wHP on pump gas on a stock long block with an AEM EMS on a Dynapack. Looks like about the same spool point too ~5k.

Ooops O.T. Back to convincing Open ECU to hack into the MINI ECU!

Yeah, our mustang dyno reads pretty low (about 19% compared to dynojet/dynapack).. stock Evo IX's put down about 215whp on it.. just for reference.

I was pretty pleased with my MINI with a 15% Alta, K&N typhoon intake, and Borla race catback doing 178whp on our dyno. That's just over 211ish on a dynojet! I was pretty pleased.

MiniMania sells an ECU modifier that plugs in and retunes, and can be reset back to stock. They also sell ECU upgrades to match your engine ,exhaust upgrades, but, it is a send in your ECU and they will mod and resend. I know of no open ECU programs available at this time.

Thanks JAGFIXER, but we talking about beyond mail-in flashes. The best option that's currently out there is to attend one of Jan's ECU tuning parties. He uses Dimsport, which lets him adjust some factory mapping, but not write new alarms. It's an ideal solution for most MINI's [including mine!], but obviously not very fun for the tweak that likes to fiddle with his transient fueling and e-gas settings 'til sundown.

Does this mean we can have an open ECU?
Would this be the best option to ultimately get?

From what I can decipher...

it's a master-slave set up where you can download from the car, and send a file to a tuner to get tweaked. But there's a lot there I didn't understand. I've asked one of my German buddies to let me know what's up there. But one thing that's interesting is that Franz of MTH is one of the tuners on the tuner list. Some of the tables list what type of physical interface is needed to get into the car and the like. But I don't know if it's free. Also, they use the FTDI drivers that are pretty common for dongleized products....

We'll see where this leads.

There's another company (not free) called Alien Tech in Italy that I think sells a tuner that can let just one VIN work so that a user can tune thier own car, but not all cars. But the site isn't that good either, and there are no US distributors... That may change as well, as they were at SEMA.

What cable are you going to use? I was looking at the pin-out on the software and it seems to be different than the cable I have to use on Evo's/Subaru's... I thought OBDII pinout would be the same for every car.. .hence the ability to read/reset codes....

There's OBD and OBD....

there are four physical standards along with the CAN interface, and they all have slightly different hardware to do what they need to do. Also, BMW uses another pin for BMW diagnostics (but not the flash/reflash).... It's really a messy standard... J1962 if you want to get it from the SAE.... But that doesn't say crapola about what bit does what, or how to do the checksums.

I'd flog it hard, hard, hard

but that's how I treat the rest of my car... So then the engine would be just like the rest of the car... Abused...

I have a VAGcom(same folks that swore their would be a BIMcom) cable that I currently use, but to be honest, I think their software is to pull the image down and send off. They do have hardware on the site as well, Im not sure how this all fits in at this point...

Their is one thing for sure...their is a demand for this....just need to find the supplier...

Yeah, there DEF is a market for this...

especially since I have access to a dyno... hint hint

We'll get to the bottom of this sooner than later.

So the VAG cable works to pull the map?

There is a downloadable table that says what type of connection is used,

as well as what thinggy from the "software toolbox". But VAG-COM cables are NOT OBD-II cables. I don't know if they are OBD-II plus extra, or different altogether. But they do have electronics in them that is more than just the level shifters that other protocols seem to need.

Matt they read OBDII fine as I use it on the MINI & other cars all the time using VAGcom software. The electronics in them is for the software token or key to use the software. I do not know if the cable would work with any other software. My MINI is down and out...so no way for me to test its access.
