M7 "Little Scoop"

Spent all of about 45 minutes yesterday installing new "Little Scoop" to provide fresh cooler air to the underside of the supercharger.

Not a difficult install but requires judicious and careful dremel cutting of the plastic surround above the radiator. All went very well and it looks great.

Here's where I removed the rubber weather striping seal on the top of the radiator surround and just used my hands to feel where there were any obstructions where I was going to dremel the snot out of it. I know some of you have completely removed the section but I wanted to retain the function of the radiator surround to some degree. I laced the new "Little Scoop" up against the surround and traced with a sharpie around it.

Each time I cut a section out I was able to see (better than just feel) where the support posts were and was able to do a better job getting the holes as large as possible.
Here I'm done dremeling, filing and sanding the holes and I'm just checking the fit before installing with double stick tape and rivets.

The scoop comes with the upper lip already double sided taped so some careful thought and I instaled the scoop with 7 rivets for strength. Any more rivets would have been even more over-kill than usual.

Here's a side view to show how far it sticks out. Easily clears the hood and grill.

Here's a shot from the front and top after installation and the normal gawking time.

I may go back and paint the scoop at sme time but for now I'm going to spend some time testing temp. difference.

And is this supposed to produce a similar effect to that created by PARTSMAN's IMD? How does it avoid passing cooling air over the rather hot radiator hose? It looks cool, but I have my doubts, especially when the IMD is such a cost effective modification. How much does the little scoop sell for?

Thanks for posting those pictures--very helpful.

I haven't seen Partsman's IMD yet but I'm going to go looking for it right now. He's a very inventive guy with great ideas.

Yes, the cooler air does pass over the rather hot radiator hose - to which I don't have an immediate solution, though I believe there are probably radiator hose wraps or sheaths much like the M7 blankets that could help there, not sure. I'm suspecting that the cooler air coming in will still benefit the underside of the Supercharger in spite of the radiator hose - though solving that heat source would be even greater.

M7 hasn't released a sales price yet to my knowledge.

I just read Partsman's Intake Manifold Cooler thread and I appreciated his temperature deltas as a result of his Mod.

I'm thinking that M7's Little scoop is going to be way easier to install than what Partsman did, and at least the way this installs will preserve the radiator surround as well as keep rising heat from entering the DFIC that Partsman and I both have apparently. That's why I didn't completely remove the Radiator surround, leaving some of the support posts that it has built in.

He stated that moving the radiator hose by shifting the clamp positions or loosening the clamps and shifting the hoses did little to improve cooling at the Intake.

Actually, I think he reports that moving the radiator hose orientation has no effect on water temperatures. My measurements and experience suggests it sure has an effect on intake temperatures because you can't install the IMD without reorienting the hoses.

And wrt keeping the rubber gasket intact, consider what its purpose is. Sealing against the bonnet to prevent air leakage above the radiator. Well, whether you use the little scoop or the IMD, you've pretty much shot that one in the pants. I think Steve50 (didn't get that right, I know) has been playing with radiator shrouds. That's also on the original IMD thread, I believe.

Anyway, I hope you will be reporting IATs and other relevant measurements so we can see how this puppy does.

Yup, you're right, it was probably water temp differences he didn't notice.
Anyhoo - I will be posting IATs and such as I get them.

Not at all as they are unassociated. This would work with any MCS.

Mine was one of the first ones produced.
Call Peter at M7 - he'll hook you up.

I have pictures of the scoop on my gallery.

Great , a couple weeks ago I cut up everything to get more air towards the intake manifold and all that and a part like this comes out. How nice is that. LOL

This is a very interesting piece indeed...

...pretty cool that Peter decided to actually make something similar in theory to mine and DrPhil's IMD.
Obviously they are very different in design, but the M7 one will definitely let more air in the engine compartment, and that's a good thing.
I have to agree with DrPhil though, if you leave radiator hose clamped right to the front of the intake manifold, you've only fixed part of the problem by opening up the shroud.

You're welcome, man. Anytime.
Looking forward to seeing what your IATs are with this installed.
BTW, nice install.

What does the scoop offer that cutting the shroud doesn't?

The scoop definitely looks cleaner...

...than my IMD...

...but is it as effective as having the whole area opened up?
