5w-50? That's some thick stuff. I'd go for 0w-40 if you want M1.

What is your change interval? Artoo (2003 stock Cooper S) gets his oil changed every 5000 miles with Mobil 1 5-30 since the beginning. He burns not a drop of oil between changes now with about 75000 miles and I am not considering changing.

A 5W oil is a 5W oil. the 30 or 50 is the breakdown level of the oil and the W stands for winter.
So, a 5W- 30 is a 5 weight winter grade oil with a 30 weight breakdown level, ect.

I think you might want to research that again. 5W30 and 5W50 should both behave approximately the same at cold temperatures (say engine startup), but the 5W30 will be thinner at normal operating temps.

I'd recommend against using the 5W50 in the MINI.

If the OP is concerned with the miles on your engine, I'm still using 5W30 in mine at 113K with no issues or change in oil consumption for what that's worth.
