Drivetrain Borla R56 Exhaust!
Borla R56 Exhaust!
I just noticed that JSC Speed now has a Borla exhaust system listed for the R56. So I jumped on the Borla website, and sure enough, it was just released. Here's a pic of the super sexy tips!

I am very excited about this! I've had Borla exhausts on 2 previous vehicles, and I LOVE how they sound. Especially on a 4 cylinder. I was all set to pick up an Alta system, but now I think I might have to go with the Borla. I'm so torn! :impatient
Anyone have one of these yet and have a sound clip they can hook me up with?

I contacted borla to be a part of their R&D out here in CA and they never got back to me. looks like they found someone else. :(
anyone else notice they painted their control arms black? i think it makes a subtle difference

I did.....I think they were trying to make their exhaust "pop" in the picture better, so it didn't blend in with the same color surroundings.
If it sounds anything like their R53 version, any of their other exhausts for 4 bangers, it should sound like butta. I absolutely LOVE the way Borla sounds. LOVE IT!!!
On I side note, I talked to JSC Speed, and they said historically, Alta systems tends to make more power than Borla systems. So if you're going for power, go Alta. If you are really just looking for a sweet sounding exhaust with some mean *** tips (like me!), and power is not your #1 priority, you can't go wrong with Borla IMO.

I'll definately second that. Borla does use straight piping, etc. but Alta tends to have larger diameter plumbing and more direct routing (although the R56 is pretty direct to begin with).
I like the Borla rumble as well, I have used their XR-1 exhaust ony my Evo and I love that sound, and we have their exhausts on 2 of our shop WRXes. I've also used Alta/Perrin stuff on our shop cars and my own SRT-4 so I'd say that's a good general summary of the two.
Borla also does not like to go near emissions equipment, whereas Alta designs their stuff to work w/ their emissions compliant cats, so they usually don't have the tapering and smaller pipe diamters that Borla typically has.

I don't know too much about Milltek, it's one of the few exhaust brands we've decided not to carry.
From what I can see from their site/pictures:
It uses 2.5" diameter pipe and is stainless steel & slip fit, similar to the Borla. I don't know much more about it than that.
For turbobacks, I'd go with Alta because of the 3" piping and dual-cats (so it will pass visual). The 3" piping will yield more power as you take the car farther and utilize turbo system mods involving more boost.
For catbacks, it's pretty similar to Borla, the decision to me would depend on the reviews of others, price of the system, and sound.
I'd be curious to hear feedback from R56 Milltek exhaust owners. I know there was a magazine that tested it and claimed gains of 27hp using the stock 172 crank hp number as a base line (my MCS dynoed 180whp stock). That was for the whole turboback.

We'll get there guys, sorry for the delays!
I put a Borla catback system on a Pontiac Vibe and it made it sound like a mean little bastard. Very well constructed and it fit just right without wiggling it around. I am seriously considering Borla.

EDIT:
Looking into it went to the borla site. Downloaded the install instructions and saw tat the front slip clamp is only 2.125" to join to stock piping and the middle clamp to join both borla tubes is only 2.25". Somebody should convince Borla to make a true 3" S-Trim version...

Precisely the reason I went with an Alta system instead.
Now for my comment on the looks.....LOL!!! the 4 inch tips look cartoonish!!! BUT....on a MINI, you can get away with things like that. My wife says it looks like a ToonTown car!! I am pleased with the turnout. I would like to post a soundclip soon if I can figure out how to do it. In the meantime, Here is a pic.....
Borla R56 Sound Clip and Movie
I finally figured how to do this. The tone is deep and the power seems good
although that is still up for debate until some dyno numbers are run.
It is a very good system.......
