Drivetrain 2004 MINI Cooper S Idle problems...
They don't seem to heve a fix yet. One time I was told to use a gas other then shell. Heard from someone else that they were told to switch to a different gas. They were told to try Shell.
This problem seems to tie into a cold start issue. I'd bring it in for the cold start and they'd update software. Cold start gets better and I'd have more trouble with idle stumble. After a while I'd bring it in for the idle problem, they'd update software the idle improves and I have worse cold start.
I've gone back and forth for about 1 1/2 yrs now. Luckily the dealer is 40 min away.

I have been having the same random rough idle problem with my 04 MCS.
It kinda pisses me off. I've never had this problem with much cheaper and "less engineered" cars. "Cute quirkieness" aside, this problem is total BS. Modern electronically controlled ignition systems should have more than ample ability to stay running smoothly no matter the situation.

i used to use shell and chevron bought the station and so now i use chevron gas. regardless mines still have the rough idle. more so in colder temps because its been warm here and i barely get it now.
See this is where one gasoline over another makes no sense. I used to use Texaco then Shell bought them all.
Mine does it too. It is not consistent. Only once in a while. Doesn't seem to be any particular conditions that I can put my finger on -- might be hot, cold, but it always seems to go from a regular idle into that sort of loping rough idle after sitting at a light for anywhere from 10-20 seconds.
It has never actually died, but it has come really close.

So there isn't any real fix to this then?
I have this same issue. I found this thread searching for more info...
I drive to and from work 12 miles each way. 4 miles of city driving, 4 miles of freeway, and then 4 miles of 55mph city roads.
It seems to me that it is most likely to happen at one of the stoplights after exiting the freeway in either direction.
It starts off really faint but I can tell that it's not running as smooth. Then it builds up progressively. I can best describe it as a 'pulse' that gets stronger each time. The first few times I experienced it, I got scared and tapped the gas which corrected it. The last couple times it happened, I let it go to see what would happen and it got really rough like it was going to stall but it eventually just evened itself out again and ran completely smooth.
Looks like the last post was a year ago. Is there any new info on this issue?

I'm upgrading my spercharger pulley soon, so I'm thinking I should just upgrade the whole ignition system - MSD coil, magencor wires, brisk plugs

Might want to look around before sinking the money into the MSD. General consensus is that the factory coil is more than adequate.
im still having this issue over a year later. exactly as you described. Since then i have added a pulley, catback, CAI, colder plugs and an RMW tune...and it STILL does it. its very much annoying now and can be quite embarrassing when im sitting at a drive thru . (it only does it after ive driven a bit then come to a stand still, ie traffic light, drive thru, stopped traffic, etc.
ive ran 93, 92, 91, and even 89 octane from every station imaginable, with no change.
i plan on adding a cam, coil, and bpv in the future...i'll track down this problem eventually.

I too have this problem with my 04 mcs. I watch my boost gauge when it starts to do this and this is what I see:
idle no a/c: it will go from 13 in/hg to anywhere between 3 and 1 in/hg. I tap my throttle which makes it go to 0 or 1-2 psi boost then it drops back down to 13 in/hg and steady idle.
I have switched out to the ALTA brisk one step colder plugs too.

True, but at least the MSD is made with corrosion resistant leads (brass).
My 04 MCS was doing this, exactly as described in the OP... I had the car in the shop for other reasons, but had them replace the plugs & wires while it was in for service... The erratic idle stopped after the wires & plugs were replaced...
My 2004 Monstah is doing this as well. If I really step on the throttle at idle, I actually lose power, but it comes right back. It's the weirdest thing, I'd have to make a video in order to demonstrate what's happening.
But it would do this for the first minute or so after starting up, but once the engine gets warmed up, everything seems normal after that.

Im thinking its an ignition coil. My #3 is pretty corroded, and Im buying a new one. I'll let you know... Mines an 04 btw. I never had this issue with my old 03, and all the posts i've read are 04 owners. I see a pattern.
My apologies for digging up an old thread, but this is EXACTLY what my '04 MCS is doing (random rough idle at a stoplight after a period of driving).
Has anyone confirmed that a coil change fixes it? I have some slight corrosion on my #3 post also and am planning on coil/plugs/wires but was wondering if this has cured the problem (which seems to stick to the '04's)
Thanks!

I have a newish coil (couple months old) and still have the problem. More prevalent with AC on, but still very intermittent.
Edit: I mean, I installed a brand new coil a couple months ago and still have the problem.

Again sorry for digging up an old post, but I haven't seen a fix for this anywhere. I may not be looking it the right place so I apologize if it's been addressed in another thread.
But I have the same issue on a stock 04 MCS with 71k on the clock. Been doing it for like a year on and off.
Anyone figure out a fix for this? Seems it's an 04 issue from my research. Thanks.
