Drivetrain At Track in limp mode
At Track in limp mode
Any useful info would be appreciated.
I'm at the track right now and mid forth run yesterday my car went into limp mode. after three starts the light went away. If I rev the car past 3000 it does it again. I just got my car out of the shop with a rebuilt engine. I finished break-in about a week ago with fresh new oil. The code it's throwing is something like faulty auxilary imput. Anyone know about this one? Thanks. I need to at least get my car running so I can get it back to the house 150 miles away.

I tried wiring the by pass valve shut but it's still not doing it. I had to trailer my car home in a buddies trailer. luckily my brother let me drive his track car on sunday so i only missed my last run session while loading up my car
Not sure what to do now that i've got it home.

Just dropped it off at the shop (not the dealership). I told them about the two map sencors and I also spoke with the guy that just built the engine. He said it may also be the vacuum hose that goes to the fuel rail is located under the intercooler.
I met you at VIR earlier this year I have IB/W car from NY
Hello Stone. I was back at VIR this past weekend after getting a new engine. Other than the engine issues and the heat it was a good weekend at the track. Hope to see you up there again.
I do have a Unichip. it is not on the car yet. I'm going to wait until i can get it tuned before i track it.

I had the same thing happen to me at Beaverun. Just off of the grid onto the track it went into limp, then died. Fired right back up and ran fine after that. I blamed the problem on putting in 104 octane for the first time then going WOT.
I started the day with a full tank of 100 octane. I got to my fourth and final run of the day when it started limping. I was 15 minutes into it at that point also.
My engine had just been rebuilt. I've blown up two in the past year. I wanted to run the 100 so as to not let the engine get to hot and break another piston. I was given this advice by more than one person. If it just cost me a few MAP sensors instead of an engine i'm alright with that.

Don't misunderstand me. I love running high octane go juice. I just think there was an error adapting to the new fuel. My last track day was in October (nice cold air) with 104 octane. The turbokompressor setup ran like a raped ape. I seriously shocked some folks including a highly-modified WRX. Coming aout of turn 7 onto the back straight I was glued to his left rear. I could almost hear him thinking he'd lose me on the straight. He finally pointed me by. Felt great. The only bad part of the day (besides spinning and going off once) was that the wheel balancing weight on a front wheel was hitting the brake line and finally broke it leaving me on course with zero brakes. Exciting to say the least.
BTW. I just checked your gallery. Do you really own an Atom and one of those giant IH trucks? If so, I'm seriously jealous.

I don't own either of those vehicles. I worked for Coke for the past nine years. Most recently I was in charge of the Vault sampling program. For that program we had 6 of those trucks. The Atom is a buddies up at the track. He felt bad for me this past weekend since my car wasn't running. We did some parade laps on the track with it. Nothing over 60mph then he let me drive it aroud the track property. It is street legal but doesn't have a tag and has never left the track property.
The dealership here in town only had one of the two sensors and of course the one i really need is the one they don't have. It should be here tomorrow before lunch. I don't want to get to excited only to have my hopes dashed away so i'm staying calm and expecting the worst for now. The one glimmer of hope I have is that with all the codes i'm getting the first one to appear is always the MAP sensor one. Then the other codes kick in. Fingers crossed.
I do have a track event this weekend at CMP. Two of my buddies are offering to let me use their cars. It's good to have friends. ones and STI and the other an E36 M3.

Doesn't matter when you started, or how long it's taken, more often than not it's Friday afternoon nail-biting time.
99% all good. after an hour or so the check engine light came on but I think that's because of the catlessness. I'll run the scanner on it tomorrow at the track. But for now i'm going to bed so i can be up at dawn. I'll let you know how it goes.
If you can find a shop with BMW/Mini diagnostic equipment,
you can get tons more info than what comes out of OBD-II information. Thisngs like intermittant sensor shorts or opens and the like.
Good luck! Who cares about codes if the car runs good!

This shop "touring car" has that equipment. The stuff i was using at the track last weekend didn't. The good equipment will be at the track with me this weekend to diagnose as we go. Two of the mechanics there are racers and will be there instructing also. They asked if they should bring the puter and I said of course.....
night all.
night all.
dkstone wins the prize. it was the map sensor.
.....so far.
I'll be back at the track tomorrow with the same two ill driving students but my car looks like it might make it through the weekend.... knock knock knock on wood.
My buddy that was going to loan me his STI called and asked if I still wanted to use it. I told him my car is back up and running. He said I could still take it if I want. I'm very lucky to have friends like this. Thanks Luda.
I'll update should my car stats change.

Well, on my first run on Sunday my car made it out 3 laps and went into limp mode. Have you ever gotten that stomach dropping feeling and a really sour taste in your mouth. I limped back around the track and to my spot in the paddock. I've never been so happy to see a broken belt on a MINI. I did have a battery light on which should have told me what was going on. I let it cool and popped on a new belt and was back out the next session.
this brings up a new question?
How many people out there have broken a belt and found trash in there crank pulley? This is the second time it's happend to me. It looks like i'm picking up some trash from the track and it's getting wedged into the pulley which is in turn cutting the belt from the inside out. Anyone?
