Best TB for the $?

G'day Mates,

My '03 MCS is currently in the shop getting some work done (new brakes+rotors, fixing the AC, etc) and I thought I might as well do some upgrades. So I was thinkin about getting the Detroit Tuned Bypass Valve + a bigger throttle body put on there.

Which aftermarket TB do you all suggest I get?

Info on my car: 2003 EB/B MCS, 15% S/c pulley, ALTA CAI, Madness Rear sway bar, powerslot rotors, EBC greenstuff pads, 215/40 Kumho MXs, Short Shifter (not installed).

Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

i hear they're not that effective; you may want to do a search on them here . i'd look for a used header . in the market place.

I have had a long talk with one of the distributors of a larger throttle body and i was told that you will see some gains after you have done a head, cam, ported intake manifold...etc...but in your case i would look for a decent exhaust and run that instead...

I agree. From what I've read, TB's only really show gains after the engine has been set free in other areas.

I'm hoping to pick up one of Randy's inhouse exhausts when ever he gets finished with it. I'm also going to be getting colder plugs, kingsbore wires, and screamin demon coil pack.

Anything else worth adding that won't cost me an arm+leg (and something I might be able to convince my parents to pitch in on)?

The Vendors will love you. "colder plugs, kingsbore wires, and screamin demon coil pack"
Research first if you want results.

Is a coil pack even really worth it?

Well my research tells me that colder Denso plugs and some aftermarket wires (would it have been better if I said Nology Hotwires? I assume not) are a good idea (especially since I'm at 40k miles on all my origonal parts). When I do maintenance I my car, I try to upgrade in the process.

Nah, track money is a non-issue. I'm in the process of doing maitenance on my car and thought I might add the next mod to it, especially since I probably won't be the one paying for it (or atleast not the whole thing).

If it's maintance time, thats different story.

When I do maintenance I my car, I try to upgrade in the process.

colder plugs< NGK can be had for about $7 dollars ea. locally.

kingsbore wires, rather expensive and not really necessary, Local MINI dealer sells colored (blue/black) wires for less.

Nology Hotwires< = waste of money

Sorry, my first impression was that you were going for a performance gain.

Save your parents money and get a job and when you're spending your own money you might thing a little harder.

lol, I have a job (several tbh). Don't jump to conclusions mate. I paid for my other mods&my tires (as well as my own bills, my groceries, my computer, etc.). My dad is covering any maitenance costs and I pay the difference over OEM parts. Here is some info on me:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a fulltime CSE major at SMU who is also working on his Masters in Game Development.

I spend my weekends waiting at The Purple Cow where I have recently been promoted to Manager.

I am a part time IT consultant and Director of ITS for a small real estate research firm in Dallas. It is great money

I am actively seeking a career in game development. My degrees will position towards a job as an engine designer but my goal is to be a producer. I am currently in talks with several developers to intern this summer but nothing is set in stone yet.

Oh, and I do volunteer online customer support for Valve Corporation where my specialty is hardware. I have been with them for two years now and it has been a great learning experience. In fact, I got the chance to visit their HQ in Seattle last October and was able to playtest Portal

Just got hired at Best Buy in the Geek Squad department.

The store I'm working at has like the 7th best Geek Squad department in the corporation (over 800 stores I believe).

The best part about it is that even though I'm taking a step down job title wise, Best Buy is going to pay me more money

TBH, I don't appreciate your attitude. I haven't bought anything yet so there is no reason to put me down. I came here to ask people who know what they are talking about for suggestions. So if you aren't going to offer help then simply don't post.

I think the OEM coil has good enough voltage. I have the MSD Superconductor wires rated at 45 Ohms/feet. The very low resistance allows for more current and spark energy. I do not kow the exact resistance of the OEM Carbon core wires but I am guessing to be around 750 Ohms. The red colors of the MSD adds to the bling factor too.

I'm surprised that everyone says TBs are not that big of a help on MINIs. I'm guessing BMW actually made these plenty large enough from factory? that is pretty rare. TB was a HUGE mod for neons, they came with 47mm and you could go up to 55 and 60mm, and it made a tremendous difference and sounded amazing.

and its cool to see another fulltime college student / best buy employee

Yes, please save your money and don't buy an aftermarket TB.

I bought the Mini-Mania enlarged TB back in 2005; I even spent money to get it professionally installed. Once it was on, I couldn't tell any difference, not even the slightest change.

To make a long story short, I sold it dirt cheap at MOTD 2006 to another NAM (don't worry, I told him it sucked), and I believe he later sold it to someone else, and it might still be floating around.

Just to be curious, why do you want to get the DT BPV? Do you know a lot about it?

While your car is in the shop and getting the brakes worked on, you might as well have them flush out your lines and put in some ATE superblue fluid. Also, depending on your milage, you might want to go replace your original supercharger belt with a new stock one or gatorback.

Get rid of yo-yo.

I will be getting the lines flushed and either ATE superblue or Motul(?).

While it is in the shop, I think i might get a 2% or 4% Crank pulley and a new belt.

The 2% seemed to increase twofold the yoyo and ping on my car, the shop did advise not too, but 16+2 I thought more is better-not always true. Thought about DTBPV to resolve as well but saved $$ and did it myself by tightening with allen wrench and streached spring. Ping still present but not as much, I do suggest Chevron 93 grade or some ultra premium petrol always. The BPV mod does make feel faster on throttle, so my next mod is a Texas Speed Works engine damper?? (not too expensive) One ball to exhaust might be cheaper too. I'm on the cheap. Track days are fun, there is scca, bmwcca, nasa.
