Drivetrain Milltek Installed!
Milltek Installed!
Executive Summary: Just installed a Milltek exhaust and love it. The sound is awesome and the power is great.
Play-by-Play:
So I purchased Longboards Milltek exhaust off of the Marketplace forum yesterday.
I have been looking at a Milltek exhaust for a few months now, but not willing to through down the cash required for a new one. So when I saw longboards post, I had to do it. It was too good of a deal to pass up.
Anyway, I got home from work last night, went out into my garage, and backed my car up on ramps. I proceeded to take my stock exhaust off. Which came off without a problem.
I went to put the new exhaust on, when I realized that I was missing some hardware:
4x - Screws, washers, and bolts.
2x - Exhaust Flange Gaskets.
I went to so much trouble taking off the old one that I didn't want to put it back. I found 3x screws, washers, and bolts that did the job, though they weren't all the same sizes.
Since it was a used Milltek exhaust the points that needed welding were welded, which made it easier. I just needed to bolt the flanges together that connect the resonator pike to the mufflers. I didn't have the gaskets, so I just put them together.
I then slid the exhaust under the car, propped the resonator side up on a toolbox and I hung the tail section to the back of the car. Great No Problems there. The tail pipes were even centered. Awesome.
I moved to the center of the car, centered the exhaust pipe, bolted on the center support bracket, and ran into a problem.
The flange on the resonator didn't perfectly line up with the flange on the Cat. The length was perfect and the pipes were flush with each other, the problem was that the flanges were rotated a few degrees away from each other. Meaning that I wasn't going to be able to get 2 bolts into it. So I put a bolt into the bottom, cleaned up, and started it up.
MAN WAS IT LOUD!!!!
So today when I drove to work it was very loud. At lunch I drove it down to a muffler shop. He cut the flange off of the resonator and bolted it to the Cat. He then welded the resonator back onto the flange. That was much easier than I thought. He did it in 30 minutes, for only $35, and he threw in a flange gasket and a couple of bolts for that flange.
If you live in the Southern California (Orange County) area, I highly recommend:
Frank at Laguna Muffler Service in Laguna Hills.
The moment I turned it on, it sounded beautiful. I had a smile ear to ear. I drove spiritedly back to work. The power increase was definitely noticeable, to say the least.
After work I stopped by Irvine Mini and picked up a flange gasket for the other flange. I also picked up a set of bolts, nuts, and washers from the hardware store. I swapped out the bolts, put in the gasket, and the project is now done.
Total Install Time: 3.5 hours
Milltek Cost: $400
Install Cost: $47 ($35/Welding, $5/Bolts, $7/Gasket)
Total Cost: $447
Result: Greater understanding of my car. Awesome sound. Added Power. Large Smile.
Good Luck Longboard with your "little project", thanks for the great deal.
