Calling all Cali Modders

So has anyone had any smog issues after going big on the top end? I'm talking porting, oversize intake valves and cam. Would love to go in that direction but am a little wary of the CARB *****. I am currently running the 210 JCW and would probably not go with a smaller pulley, although I could be convinced...

Any experiences/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hmm. So you're saying that a properly tuned car with a big valve head would not pass then? You'd have to flash the ECU with a super lean map before testing, then go back again afterwards?

So far I am not hearing encouraging words... I have grappled with the Smogmen before, and they are most hateful creatures.

Where in cali are you? If you can get to San Jose area I will get you to a shop that will pass your smog.

I'm nearby and will definitely let you know if I need a mod-friendly smog shop. No need to smog yet, just thinking through the implications of doing a big head.

We need to compile a list of mod-friendly smog testing services.

I've done a big head with this shop as well and it should be ok with the smog. I have an 1987 325i convertible that I had done all sorts of mods to it and no one in town could come close to smoging it untill I took it to this shop that does all my Mini mods.

OBD2 and you

Most states that do smog testing use the OBD2 portion of the factory ecu to determine if the car passes or not. If the vehicle has a problem with fuel trim or cat effic. then this will be detected when the monitor status is checked at the inspection station. There is a certain condition where all the internal tests have run their course and passed for the car to pass. If you clear your codes to turn off the light the monitors will not have been run to completion and the car will fail. Proper tuning is required to achieve max output as well as operating parameters that are within oe specs. Piggy backs will not do this, only proper ecu reflashing.

Good info, thanks LDG! By any chance, do you have someone who you can recommend in the NorCal?
