Pocono - interesting place

spent the day in a Spec Racer. Intersting experience...never been in a Spec Racer before nor on that track - north course in the morning and south course in the afternoon.

I took about 2 hours to adjust to the feel and grip level of this car. Lots of fun...on a few occasions I depressed the throttle and brake at the same time while come off Super Speedway thru the kink I need a little more practice with heel and toe...and I need some smaller driving shoes

Standout observation of the day...rain drops the size of golf ***** make an impression above 100mph...

Ah yes. Running the North course clockwise that kink/bump coming off the oval into the infield is fun. You get to see how big you can make the corner workers eyes as you flash past the flag station. Great fun!

Running the South course counter clockwise is the best. You actually brake from over 100 (in a MINI) as you are going towards the oval's outside concrete wall, before the left into the infield. Another bump you want to get right as you try to not fixate on the tire wall about 50 feet dead ahead.

I ran the South course clockwise in a spec racer with Bertil Roos. They're one day event.

The East Course is best for the MINI. Tight and technical.

Glad you had fun.

Since moving to Texas last year, I've run on the Texas World Speedway roval several times. Next month I'll be running the Texas Motor Speedway roval after dark. Nice idea for an August event in Texas.

Yes, running the south course counterclockwise was interesting in the very area you wrote about; first, finding the turn-in point is difficult, and, it's a bump and off-camber turn. Not a place I would want an off! I only had time for 8-9 laps on this one, but very technical for sure. There is new pavement just before the final turn and the seam is poorly matched. The car skips about one foot to the right as you set up for the turn The back end never felt squirly, but I imagine a faster driver might find this spot a wee bit difficult.

I was there Thursday all day. Six of us rented the track...so although it was expensive, we had a wide open track with unlimited passing. All of us came together at only one point during the day...three spec racers, a spec Miata, a 2007 Porsche 996, and a formula 2 type open wheel car that spent most of its time in the garage . This occured in the infield section and created huge potential for an off...which did occur. Four cars wide...oh no!!! I remained a few lengths back hoping to avoid wrting a check for damages. One of my friends wrote a check for $9,300.00 for damages in a race with his Spec Racer. His luck continued as he ran over a fairly large rock thrown into his path. This hit the car just right causing the Halon extinguisher to go off. Another bent frame. Yikes!!! I was in the pits when he came in and his pants and shoes looked a wee bit frosty.

We were between 110-115 going into Devil's Elbow - according to my friend in the Spec Miata...I had to work up to that speed...not a place to miss a braking point. Basically flat out with no lift thru the kink. I had to really concentrate on heel and toe work here - I'm very rusty - I manged to depress the throttle a couple of times while depressing the brake while entering this turn. Thankfully that was early in the day, so my speeds were quite a bit slower. But, there is plenty of run-off room there
