Glass scratches
Glass scratches
I got my 04 MCS a couple of weeks ago. Who ever had it before me must have dried it off with sand paper! There where a few bad paint scratches that I got out, but now I'm on to the glass. Thats right, the glass. The windshield has a few scuff marks, but all the glass on the drivers side is scratched to hell.
So my question is, is their a way to polish these out? I have done a little research and found a few products online, but then I read reviews that say they do not work. The scratches are numerous, but light. I can not feel them with my fingernail. At night you do not notice them, but in direct sunlight they jump out. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

I would try a glass polish. Griot's sells a polish and then a fine polish that *should* get fine scratches out, but I've never used it personally.
You might try claying it first too. It might get some of the "gunk" out of the scratches that makes them more obvious while you figure out what to do with them.

Jason,
Call your local 3M distributor and get Finesse-It polish system. There will be 2 different compounds you will need. This is what is used by the OEM's for removing glass and paint scratches during the manufacturing process. You can't do it with only one process.

Thanks Skuzzy and IndyCooper. Will either one of these approaches distort the glass? I've read about people using polishes only to be left with distorted spots in the glass. I've read about the jewelers rouge. You are supposed to only use the red stuff right? I'll start looking for the 3M product as well. Thanks again,
Jason

Obviously, when you remove scratches, you are actually removing material from the surface. If you remove enough material, you definately can leave a distortion in the glass.
Yes, the red rouge is the one.
By the way, removing a scratch from glass is almost always a two step process. It is almost impossible to remove the scratch without imparting micro-scratches, then you have to remove the micro-scratches.
