zaino makes polishes for both the plastic and glass as well - the glass wax is abrasive slightly so it shouldn't be used more then monthly or every two months. Zaino itself doesn't stain plastic like some carnuba waxes do.

Did you polish the plastic with the Z5 and also, why'd you use Z5 instead of Z2? I'm just curious because I'm getting ready to order it myself. I'll probably get the Z1 instead of the ZFX too.

1) Don't get z1 - get the ZFX - it can take a long time to dry without the zfx and for a first time user of zaino you will apply it too thick and will take even longer to dry and will be a pain to remove.

2) z5 has two purposes...it adds depth(though not as good as a carnuba) and fills small swirls. Your top coat should be z2

3) If you want a deep shine put a coat of p21s on top of your zaino - works great.

4) Sythetic waxes/polishes do not hide swirl marks well - they actually make them look more pronounced, so car prep is very importmant. If you have swirls i'd use a SMR like 3M SMR, don't forget to clay the car as well.

5) For the plastic - just wash it good to get it clean then just use the plastic polish...no need for z5/z2 on it.

Mother's "Back to Black" also works great to remove wax residue from the plastic trim. Thanks to MCO for introducing me to this great product!

I would not use Black to Black before using the Zaino polish...afterwards but not before as the zaino will want to bond to the surface and you want it clean...atleast that is the case with the paint so i'm assuming it is the same with the plastic.

chrisnl,

Unless I'm wrong (because I've never used it) Back to Black only temporarily hides the residue and doesn't remove it. From what I've heard, 3m's Adhesive, Bug, and Tar remover actually removes the stuff from your trim, and then you can use B2B to darken the trim again.

Keep in mind, it's always best to put a trim protectant on your trim to help prevent future fading. 303 Aerospace Protectant or your favorite vinyl product will put it right.

yes, Black to Black just hides....some other items that remove the residue believe it or not is Crisco, Peanut Butter, Peanut Oil, and a drafter's eraser.

I'll second the 303 comment - they make great stuff.

I've read that the drafter's eraser is good on smooth plastic trim, but won't do the whole job on the semi-textured stuff on our MINIs... An eraser might get a lot, but probably not all, off our trim.

Ditto on everything except (5). Zaino's UV protectants will keep your plastic from fading.

Absolutely take the advice of the ZFX over the Z1. You'll see the tiny bottle and think "WHAT THE HECK!", but it's well worth it, and that tiny bottle goes a long way, especially on a MINI.

Also, try to put as little Z2/Z5 on your car as possible. The idea is to put on multiple thin coats -- the thinner the better.

In between coats of Z2, spritz and wipe down with Z6. It'll make the Z2 go on easier and enhance the shine.

Have fun,
JS

i'll have to double check, but I thought the plastic polish had UV protectants in it making the z5 unnessesary

Yes, the Z14 plastic polish has the UV protectant. But based on my experience, applying Z5/Z2 to the plastic bonds better and adds better UV protection. Plus it's one less product to purchase.

Fins -

Car looks great. For someone who's better at making cars dirty than clean, can you give me a 1,2,3... of what products to use, when and in what order? You can use all Zaino products since it looks like I'll be going that route. My MCS is black and I want to keep it looking good. Also, where do I get the 303? I had an 87 Jetta back in the day and the black trim always faded and looked like crap.

Much appreciated.

PDX - I'm a zaino diehard - love the stuff - but on black stick with carnuba or atleast top the zaino with a carnuba like p21s. Zaino will protect like hell on black just like any other color but since black shows depth so well which sythetics don't do well you will want to either top with carnuba or skip the zaino all together.

Thanks for the advice. What I really need is someone to take a few minutes and make a list such as:

1. Wash car with X
2. Dry car with X
3. Use X type of claybar

...etc. Money is no object.

It's alot to ask I know, but my current black 4Runner is all swirly and I vowed I would not let that happen to my MINI.[LIST]

Thanks!

Are you willing to wax every couple months?

If so I would go with Clay Magic for the clay - one of the best there is on the market.

I would then use the P21S cleaner polish, P21S Carnuba Wax, P21S Car Wash, Clearkote Quick Detailer, P21S Wheel Cleaner, Pakshak Microfiber Towels, Fieldcrest 100% Cotton towels - i forget the product line for the towels as there is more then one fieldcrest line, but it is their top line, I know a few people that sell these towels that have been restiched in small sizes including little finger applicators for tight spots. I would use Zaino Glass Polish and Plastic Polish and Stoners Glass Cleaner for everyday use.

If you don't want to wax that often then get ZFX with Z2 for clearcoat, Z6 quick detailer, z5 (adds depth and removes very fine swirls), Zaino Glass and plastic polishes, Zaino Car wash, and use the same towels, clay, and wheel cleaner as mentioned above.

The inbetween the two above, you could do the zaino process then top with P21S Carnuba Wax but if you do that I'd switch to the P21S Car Wash and Clearkote Quick Detailer spray.

Here's a thread on how to's:

Zaino How To (don't skip ANY of these steps -- you'll see what I mean!

Make sure to use 100% cotton towels such as Fieldcrest. You'll further prevent swirls that way. Pull up http://www.zainobros.com and click on their order form to get an idea of what you're going to spend. The stuff goes a long way, so it's not as expensive it seems.

I'd recommend sticking to one product rather than mixing them. Sorry daMatta, just a personal preference.

Good luck!

if you read autopia(largest site on the net soley dedicated to car detailing) you will hear of the great success of topping zaino with p21s. It works wonderful and leaves the zaino unharmed. The problem with just zaino on a black car is it magnifies swirls and scratchs and the z5 is only for VERY VERY small swirls - I've used it on several cars with different levels of swirls and on black it hardly does anything unless that are almsot invisible. Zaino is great, but it has its weaknesses and black cars is a major one.
