Porter Dual Action Question

I have been experimenting with my Porter Cable Dual Action polisher for about a month now and I have a few questions. I am always very worried about burning my paint, so am very cautious in what speed I will turn the polisher up to. So, I was wondering, am I supposed to turn it to the full speed (6 or 7, I believe) to obtain the optimum results? Also, am I supposed to apply any pressure to the polisher as I am working around the car, or is the weight of the polisher enough pressure? Thanks!

The weight of the polisher should be plenty. You definately don't need to add any more pressure by pressing against the paint.

I rarely turn it on over 4-5k. It just starts slinging polish everywhere and doesn't seem to make things go that much more quickly.

I think that there are a few polishes that need some speed to warm up and get working (Maybe the new Zaino polish... but I've never used it), but most of the stuff you probably have in your garage is fine at med-slower speeds. I tend to use slower speeds with more abrasive compounds as well... Just to be careful.
