Dr. Color Chip ......

I have a few chips on my hood that I have never been happy with the results of correction using base coat/clear coat touch up. I stopped by the only local body shop I would trust around here to get an estimate. It would cost over $800 and take 4 days to be done. I trust them only because they use Glasurit.

Yesterday, I read about Dr Color Chip and saw a few videos. I ordered a kit For about $80. Anybody has experience to share with this product on a dark metallic finish?

I recently used paint from Dr Color Chip. I didn’t use their smear method because the chips were on the edge of a door. Their paint was a good color match for my Blazing Red Metallic car.

That’s more than I can say for one of their competitors who couldn’t come close in two attempts. They blamed it on fading when I sent them a photo of their paint on a card against one of my door jambs. They had no answer when I pointed out that their own website suggested comparing with a door jamb or sill.

I plan to try another Dr Color Chip kit for my son's black Paceman.

I used Dr Color Chip on our dark blue metallic SUV. The dealer-supplied touchup paint showed up as black. The De Color Chip matched the color perfectly.

BUT, the end result is dull, compared to the surrounding paint.

Is there a way to add clearcoat, or otherwise shine up the spots?

So, from your comment Dr Color Chip seems to be just a "chip filler" that has no clear resin mixed in. I was a bit worry about that but I will see.

I tried the Dr Color Chip kit today. I ordered the complete kit with the squeegee. First, the mix for the Lighting Blue Metallic is far better than the Automotive Touch up I already have and far better than the BMW OEM kit being really too dark.

If you follow the instructions, it works pretty easily. The paint dries fast and the reactive solution doesn't damage the clear coat and wipes out nice. Small chips repairs blend well to the overall finish but this is far from perfect. I believe the results may be better on solid colors than metallic two and three stages finishes as mine.

I used the squeegee on a deeper chip to find out that this no better technique than just dropping with one of the toothpicks provided with the kit. The other reason I have mixed feelings about the final results is I tried to correct what was bad from the Automotive Touch Up kit used previously.

To conclude, I can see an improvement with Dr Color Chip because of the better color match, how easy it is to use and the fact you can't go wrong or mess up the finish. For bigger chips, they still look there and of course, the solution is a complete spray job.
